It looks as if I'll be picking up a longish contract in Stockley Park, and will need to live locally during the week.

I can't bring my sailing boat up as the beam and draft are too much for the convenient marinas, so I am considering a 48ft narrowboat.

What are the snags to living 3/4 nights a week on board in the Chertsey area please ? And general advice on overwintering in a reasonably well appointed narrowboat with multiple source heating, in a marina.

Finally, any views on deprecation ?

I've plenty of seatime on the lumpy stuff, but none on river/canals !

thanks in anticipation

Whats the protocol for doing that ? Can I just delete and re-ask ? Or do I need to promise limitless beer to those who I offend by dual posting ?

There has been a fair bit of a contretemps (is that how you spell that?) over on the Thames Forum over Narrow Boats. Quite a lot of them really do not like Narrow Boats, or it seems Narrow Boaters!

If you are feeling brave, go for it, but don't be surprised if you get some surly and or sarcastic comments /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

There might be a problem finding a liveaboard berth for long enough. We had a year on the Thames - it was made up of 6 months at St Katherines, a couple of months at Chiswick, a couple of months at Brentford and then doodling up and down the Thames. We could not stay any longer at any of those moorings...this was four years ago so things might be different.

I don't think you'll offend, just a better forum to ask on. Narrow boats are not the only option and the people who use the Thames are better able to answer your question. There is a wealth of experience to tap in to!

There has been a bit of stuff about narrow boats but much of it tongue in cheek! don't worry...just ask!

My first stop would be Uxbridge Boat Centre on 01895 252019. It's not far from Stockley Park and very helpful owners and staff.

Since he's only living on it a few days a week, he might be able to get away with a non-residential mooring. However, moorings are hard to come by, so sort that out before finding the narrowboat.

Good luck

All now sorted, thanks to various advice and suggestions received here.

It will be strange sitting on a boat that doesn't go up and down with the tides !

Thanks for all the help ! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
