West Country Moorings?

I'm researching the cost of moorings in West Country.

15m LOA, I draw 2.75m (9'). I don't need marina moorings, and facilities are not that important, although a nearby pub would be handy!

Has anyone any suggestions for economical moorings; I'm currently thinking Plymouth or Falmouth areas, for maybe 3 months.

All advice appreciated, thanks in advance,

Re: West Country Moorings

a bit big for the normal run of moorings. the bulk of those in plymouth are limited to around 9m. i have seen a few bigger ones off mashfords yard so you could try there.

There are suitable buoys at the entrance to the Fal, opposite Falmouth town quay. You'd need to phone the Falmouth Harbour Master for price and availability. They are a bit exposed (i.e. not tucked behind the docks) but you should be OK with your displacement. Loads of pubs and bars in Falmouth from the moderately posh to the downright seedy. One pub overlooking the Fal lets you take your own food and sit on their terrace, where you could see your boat.

Fowey is another possibility but the drawback is parking and transport (I presume you will have a car if you are there for three months). The other drawback of Fowey is the lack of decent food shops - you really need to drive out to a supermarket unless you don't need to shop on a budget and don't mind a poor selection of tired food.

Between Plymouth and Falmouth there aren't any alternatives.

So which pubs are downright seedy then ?, Also to add to the interest there are more than 5 Pubs that directly overlook the harbour.

The BoatHouse
The Star and Garter
The Watermans
The Seafront
The Quayside
Five Degrees West
The Cutty Sark

Maybe you could just anchor somewhere up the Fal ?

No help for the mooring though /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

[/ QUOTE ] There is an anchorage by the large moorings, directly opposite the town quay but you couldn't leave a boat like that for three months. In any case, I would be worried about about fouling let alone re-setting on each tide. There is quite a current down the Fal and in an easterly the wind blows without much protection from the Roseland peninsula - the lee of the Roseland only seems to extend a few cables - so a buoy is the only acceptable way.

As for seedy pubs, I seldom go into them and tend to judge them by the look and demeanour of those seen coming from and going into them. Based on that, there are several quite seedy ones - though 'seedy' is a rather subjective term and in any case, one man's meat.....! The Greenbank Hotel overlooks the Fal and that's quite posh.
