West Country Marina\'s

Help, all you west country sailors....
For my sins I have been posted to work near the Eden project & I want to live aboard to do the odd job over the winter, so I need a marina with elec. However it would seem that the nearest marina is either Mylor or in the opposite direction where I am at Plymouth.... is there nowhere closer????

Re: West Country Marina\'s

I don't think Fowey has the facilities you require, Falmouth and Plymouth are your only "real" marinas, but you might consider Padstow. It's still a drive, but it's closer to St Austell than either Plym or the Fal

The only problem with Padstow is that it's the wrongs side of the dutchy for your boat, and therefore longer to and you still need a car! :-(

There is nothing between Plymouth and Falmouth - thank goodness some say. Plymouth would probably be your better bet, but don't forget your passport and you will need a book of Bridge tickets (£20.00) so that you can get back into Plymouth at half price.
The road (A38) is slightly better than anything further West out of season, but if you go on into next summer Heaven help you!

Would there not be some facility at Truro - like a boatyard or whatever? Nice place and as close as you could get. How big is your boat?

Re: West Country Marina\'s

Thanks chaps...I was afraid that it might be the case. I am already in Plymouth at Yacht Haven but its an hour's drive to the job site. I wonder if Mylors a better bet as far as roads are concerned? the job is scheduled to last 30 months.
Also there is a point of which is the better sailing area for next summer.... not really a lot to choose between each location they are both great cruising areas... but if you had a choice which would you choose?

Although I would be quite happy in the summer at anchor or on a buoy.....for the winter I do want some instant heat from an electric fan and a few other home comforts, so it looks like a Marina, unless any other thoughts...maybe leave the boat and lodge over a pub?.......

The yacht is a Moody 30. fin.

Re: West Country Marina\'s

FWIW I would talk to the Fowey Harbour Master first and see what he can do to help. I've always found them more than happy to do what they can to assist. I'ld do a deal with them and with the money saved on mooring and travel I'ld look at buying a generator and/or Eberspacher. The clubs in Fowey have got excellent facilities so there's a bit of extra comfort available on cold winters nights.

To be honest though I love Fowey and hate Marina's so I can can hardly claim to have an unbiased view!

The only problem may be car parking.

Joe

Thanks Joe I will try Fowey
"The clubs in Fowey have got excellent facilities so there's a bit of extra comfort available on cold winters nights".... Hmmmm! I wonder what comforts we are talking about? Better not let SWMBO know.

I must admit I go along with your comments on Marina's, & the idea of a gen. set has already been in mind, as I want a micro wave oven, as the cost of a new gas cooker is totally outrageous.grrrrrr as usual its a "MARINE" spec!!!
For the cost of a small crappy Boat cooker, you can buy a hob and a top of the range Microwave, & now you can get a really nice enclosed, Honda gen set for around £800 that will do all your electrics on board.

£800 Honda genset?

At that price, would you get enough power output to run a hob?

PS Fowey is a smashing little place, and the Harbourmaster and his people are very helpful. It can be a bit rolly at times, though. There's parking up by the chain ferry, if you don't want to walk all the way up the hill.

I would not give up on the Charles Town option. They may or may not accept you for the winter. But you would be alongside and electric should be posible.

Re: Sorry, you\'ve lost me...

Ok.............

Honda sets: There are quite a few types from normal cheap open frame jobs to low noise fully enclosed .... go to the following & have a look around they seem to have good prices and quite a few different types of gens. the ones I was looking at are the eu series but there are much cheaper sets available, if you are willing to put up with the noise.

good luck

Plymouth Yt Haven is the marina in Plymouth that is the furthest away from your job. Have you thought about the Torpoint Yacht Harbour in the old Ballast Pound. I don't know if electricity is available but you would be on the Cornish side of the river and would probably get to work atleast 10mins quicker.

Re: Fowey

We had a lovely, though sadly non-sailing holiday in Fowey this year so I'm quite envious of someone who is going to work and sail down there. I'd love to get the time to take my boat down there one day, tho' it needs a few weeks to do the area justice. (SWMBO will insist we revisit all the gardens again.)
I'd try and get as far up the river as is feasible, it looked a bit bouncy in the roads most of the time. I believe there are some visitors berths up by Boddinick. Lots of moorings up the Pont but most looked decidedly shallow. You can get a season ticket for all the car parks in Fowey, and trekking up the hill to the main one would definitely keep you fit! Half a mile and 70 metres!
There are lots of holiday cottages in and around Fowey and Polruan that are probably empty in the winter, if you needed a week in the warm with access to your own bath and washing machine in the depths of February, it would be worth asking around when you get there.

Re: West Country Marina\'s

If you want ease of access by car Falmouth would be a better option than Mylor...By the time you've got out of the harbour, up that steeeeep hill, then along the lanes to Perranaworthal it would take 10-15 mins, if you'd have set off from Falmouth, it's thru Penryn, and past Carnon Downs before you know it....it could get a bit snarled up thru Truro in the mornings, but the road from Truro to St Austell is pretty fast...15 mins from Fal to Truro then 15-20 mins to St Austell.

Another thing is that you have Falmouth on your toerail....30 months in Mylor Yacht harbour, might give me cabin fever, there isn't too much to do, unless you row up to the village, and get back b4 low tide...with Falmouth there are pubs and restaurants galore, trips to Helford for the weekend, or...you could always sail to Fowey at the start of the week and sail back for the weekend when you want you're elec and heating....just go to the pubs in Fowey, and have a whisky onboard, that'll warm you up :)

Charlestown latest.

I called them up last Saturday for a visit.

The lock gates are inopperable as winter maintenance has started early.

Not sure when you would be able to get in but the place sounds delightful, so give them a call and see.
