Proposing a first visit to the west coast of Scotland this year with our sunfast 36. sailing from the irish sea where would you surgest we visit so that i can keep the familly of a sailing wife who likes good food and two teenage children happy

Depends how long you have but for starters:
Gigha - great beaches then through Islay Sound to
Colonsay - Good grub at the hotel.
Iona - Anchor off martyr's bay or try for one of the private moorings - if overnight perhaps the Bull Hole is a safer bet for anchoring.
Tobermory - Fuel, Shops, Chocolate and dine at the Anchorage.
Kerrera - Handy for Oban and dine at Ee-Usk
Puilldobhrain - walk over to the pub - great anchorage.
Crinan/Ardfern
back through the canal
East Loch Tarbert
Anywhere in the Clyde
Portpatrick
Home to wherever.
Achievable in 2 weeks.

Try and call in at The Pierhouse, Port Appin to sample the seafood - the best clam chowder outside of New England.

10 moorings, free to customers.

Enjoy the secret side of Scotland however to ensure you keep up moral amongst all crew members get SWIMBO to attend an Avon party and stock up with
AVON WOODLAND FRESH DRY OIL SPRAY - MOSQUITO REPELLANT

This is the renamed Skin so soft and is sworn as being such a good mosquito repellant that even our hardy marines take it into battle. The scottish Midges hate it as well /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif You might all smell of citronella but you should be bite free .

PS some entrepeneur is flooging it on Ebay as mosquito repellant

Thanks for the replies so far. Only coming up from Maryport in Cumbria so plenty of time, sailed to France and back last year. We will have at least three weeks weather dependant. Last unforgetable experience of the midge was camping in Tarbert while visiting my farthers cousin Gordon at the boat yard their well over thirty years ago.

Another favourite of ours is Loch Aline. Excellent choice of anchorages. The Whitehouse restaurant in the village is exceptional. It's small so you may need to book and it's a long walk from the usual anchoring spots.
The loch is very attractive in spite of a small sand mine near the village.

Do not visit Scotland. Horrible place, weather awful, scenery awful, people awful, lots of rocks to hit, and the world's most vicious midges. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If coming up the Firth of Clyde earn a few brownie points with SWMBO and the kids.....venture up river to Braehead. New indoor ski facility at Xscape AND a shopping mall, with pontoons.

Would break up an otherwise quiet and eventful itinerary.

Cheers

Clyde

On any given summer Saturday night, you'll find more boats anchored in Puilldobhrain than DNF the Cowes Combined Clubs 'Round the Island Race' last year.....

.....and if you join the long and winding road of refugees heading a mile or so across the inter-tidal marshes to the wee pub, don't forget to take your anti-midge defences......

Oh, and they'll be waiting for you, coming back, too!

Awful place, midge ridden, deserted anchorages, locals eat their children, crap food, what more can I say, suggest you head to the Solent, and join the other 10,000 that seem to think that is real sailing!!!!!

P.S. I would like to keep the peace and quiet to my self!!

Paul.

B U L L S ** T.............................. Well apart from the midges and I am a Taffy .. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Steady on, don't you know the midge is the National Bird of Scotland.

Cue for one of Lakey's lovelies in tartan. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Tee Hee! Thought that might get you going.

In fact it wasn't as late as it looks and 6 or 8 boats came in later but it's the first time I've ever been the only boat anchored there.

Second the vote for the Whitehouse restaurant. Langoustines the size of lobsters from Loch Aline itself. They really don't come much fresher.

Those midges, eh?
We breed them by the millions and train them specifically to seek out non-Scots and we still keep getting bloody tourists? What more will it take? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Time to start breeding wolves again I suppose... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
