After seeing that everything works and being happy with condition on viewing , did you / would you attend on day off survey / sea trial ? . For various reasons I will struggle to attend but have given surveyor and engineer a list of specifics to check . As usual all your opinions are appreciated .

Andy, you've got good sound knowledge and know what's right or wrong on boats so if you're happy with intended purchase and trust the surveyor then I don't see any issues. I'd prefer to be there but I would'nt lose any sleep over it.
Keep us posted with results, looking forward to seeing whatever it is in LYH asap.

Surveyor is more likely to miss something if he's distracted while carrying out inspection. Leave him to it and talk with him afterwards about his findings.

Done both; the last time I decided that I was better off earning money to pay his his fee and so didn't attend. If I was in the same position again I think I would stay away and leave them to get on with their job.

Mind you, I trusted the last surveyor.... :)

Thanks guys , the surveyor is going to check everything but I'm not bothered about the odd faulty light bulb or dripping tap , just need to know if nothing major is wrong so fingers crossed .

I was in the same position when I bought my first (and only) boat. It broke down on our first delivery trip as something had not been refitted after the engine service and seawater was sprayed all over the engines and started filling the bilge! Since the sea trial was supposed to have happened after the engine service I was less than pleased! I wouldn't make that mistake again.

I can go down as an independent. Having said that, it is the surveyors liability if anything happens further down the line as told to me recently by a repair shop. So dont worry.

If it is my boat I would go it really is an educatiom that you will be lucky to find at an RYA training school.

I was present at OB's recent survey as vendor. I thought the surveyor, Julian of Hamble Yacht surveys, was excellent and fastidious. But the written report seemed to concern a survey I was not at.

Not because of the minor issues it described, but because none of the several minor items and one major item listed were mentioned during the process, indeed as far as surveys go OB received praise.

So my concern here is that due to written reports easily being taken out of context, many a buyer has fled from a sale because of the wording, when had they been present no doubt the surveyor could have explained his concerns directly to his client there and then.
