We\'re doomed...

Having finished the antifouling the other day, we went for a walk in the sunshine, and stopped to look in the window of the brokers (as one does).

"Let's ask if we can have a look at that one" says SWMBO.

"Eh?" says I, since SWMBO is not normally interested in "tyre-kicking".

The boat in question was a Bavaria 34....

So we got the keys and info from blokey in the office, and off we toddled. Once on board, I set to work. Having been educated in Bavariaphobia by this forum, I was lifting floorpanels, looking for unsealed end grain, pressing the woodwork, poking around to see where panels were not properly sealed/bedded in etc., etc., etc....

Meanwhile SWMBO was pointing out the cockpit layout, cooing over the large berths and good stowage on board, delighting in the good cruising spec etc., etc., etc.....

On climbing back onto the pontoon, SWMBO declared "I like that boat"

In the words of Private Fraser, "We'rre doooomed".... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: We\'re doomed...

Obviously I don't know how old your Moody is, but swapping a Moody 31 for a Bav 34 seems like a backward step to me?

I know a fair few owners who would give their eye-teeth for a set-up where their SWMBO would be that enthusiastic. So if the objective is 'a happy couple of cruisers', then maybe ( as with houses, pets, kitchen gear and colour schemes ) the path of least resistance is the best way.

Enjoi.

Out of interest did you find any fault or were they the faults you expected to find ?

I agree with Talbot

Re: We\'re doomed...

John, I had this very problem myself.
I was deliriously happy with our 22ft Jouet 680, but we went to the boat show in 2004 and SWMBO asked if she could go on one of the big boys boats.
Coo she said, I like this, you arent bent over double, and you donrt have tomove the loo into the cabin floor space at night in case you want to wee, oh and yes the cockpit is large, is it really fitted with a shower, wow, and central heating too.
I ummed and ahhed for the best part of 8 milliseconds, and tentatively agreed that we should look into a bigger boat.
I like this one she said, on the Jeanneau stand in the SO32. Ooh yes I said, and its got a lift keel too.
Lets go and look at the boats in the used show at Swanwick. So we did. Tat she said, all rubbish, might as well get a new one for the prices they are asking. Before swooning, I agreed to go and look again.
Back to Soton following day, and looked at all the big boys boats and she said she likes the white one. The 35? Yes, and look its got a lift keel.

Carpe Diem John, recognise the call, and rise to the occasion. I think a Moody 376 would suit you v. nicely.

Re: We\'re doomed...

I disagree. Last year we looked at several catamarans up to 30 feet long. My wife and family didn't like any of them as none had standing headroom in the saloon.

Re: We\'re doomed...

Bear in mind that the opinions voiced here re Bavaria might not be a true reflection on the boats' qualities. There's an awful lot of satisfied Bav owners about. Having said that you might take your wife to have a look at a similar Jeanneau or Beneteau before taking the plunge.

Errrm - it looked OK. There were some things I liked (e.g. the neatly routed & accessible water pump/plumbing/seacocks), and some things I didn't (the visible sealant between the forrard bulkhead and the headlining). As a coastal cruiser (which is all we're interested in - no gung-ho blue water stuff for us) it would do the biz.

Anyway, we're not buying yet......

'sfunny you should say that - we went on board one in the marina last summer. If there's such a thing as Cabin Envy, then SWMBO had a bad case of it - she was positively drooling over the aft cabin. I was thinking about more mundane things, like who wants a second heads to unblock, or an extra 7ft of boat to antifoul.....

But we're definitely not buying yet....

O.k. chaps, what odds are on offer that John has to get the cheque book out before the end of the season?

Re: We\'re doomed...

We had the same problem. I carted SWiMBO round the brokers looking at Westerlys. I really liked a Seahawk we saw in Dover and was desperate to view an Oceanquest CC.

All I got from SWiMBO was " Oh, they're so dingy inside and cramped and look at those awful heads - no shower!" "Why can't have a boat like we charter in Greece" (Bavaria 34).

So we start looking at BenJenBavs. Then it's "Oh they still look tatty, why don't we get a new one?"

The rest as they say, is history. After a compromise on size ...............................
