I plan to sail from Cardiff to Swansea for the weekend. I now see there is to be little wind and would like to see if there are any harbours on the way. My charts are on the boat. Barry is too close to Cardiff.

Hi Allan. You may do better putting this on the Bristol Channel part of the forum (go to the main index and scroll down) On the Welsh side there isnt much other than Porthcawl Harbour enterable about 2 hrs each side of HW.

On the Other side Weston YC on the River Axe Burnham YC on the river Brue and Watchet are all reachable on one tide. minehead and Porlock will require dropping down on the ebb then anchoring off waiting for the tide .

You could leave early on the flood and go the otherway up to Portishead Marina in about 3 hours . Have a good weekend. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

PS If near Porthcawl, note the Skere Rocks!

Thanks to both of you, I'll look at Pothcawl. I will also be carefull to avoid ALL rocks. I have 'done' Portishead and Watchet so looking for new places.

Is Swansesa up the river towards Milford Haven - if so, you could call in at Dale on the left of the entrance - supposed to be very nice ... never been myself.

errrm, Swansea is on the Bristol Channel, just about, Milford Haven is West around the coast, on the coast of Wales, no river in common.

Dale is lovely, but no connection to Swansea or rivers.

Milford Haven is a bit like Poole or maybe Chichester. Great huge natural harbour, with lots of sheltered water. It has some industrial bits, but many hours of cruising in beautiful scenery

Not very close to Swansea though.

Parts are industrial, but so are large amounts of Portsmouth and Southampton, and still loads of great scenery in the Solent and surrounding areas.

Milford Haven is not somewhere a lot of boaters would head, but it's worth the visit.
