The last 3 years, my 2 weeks on the boat have been ****. Rain, wind etc, I bought a "conservatory" for the cockpit, swmbo joked, now we have got that we wont need it! Anyway, Benetau cup in Pwllheli first, then off to swansea to pick the binlids uni stuff up, northerlies all the way, sun to die for then southerlies back up cardigan bay, just hopped from port to port, magic, beam reaching at 8 - 9 knots with the sun shining, better than the ionian!

Nice bit of weather recently.
When we ran the B&B we kept a close eye on the weather.
I can reveal that from about Easter on until mid-June you are pretty safe.
July and August have been very disappointing since 2004.
September and October can be very nice indeed.

There you are. Plan accordingly.

weeks of sun cover to cover over the past month, on holiday for two weeks on friday, deciding where to go, still southerlies so might end up 1st day iom, but the forecast is going downhill tonight swmbo will not go out in f6, just hope the forecast gets better.

or it'll be two weeks under the 'conservatory'.

Lakesailor, I agree. My observations are that summer weather has a direct correlation to the school holidays (Scottish). As soon as they break up, the rain starts. For those planning summer cruises - the schools finish on Friday btw.

We are doing cale canal and west coast at the start of august. Fully expecting two weeks of either winds 1 gusting 1 or 8 gusting 10. During the calm days the rain will be coming straight down, the others it will be mostly horizontal.

Sun forecast again for 3rd week in August (schools back then - obviously)!

We had a wonderful 2 weeks at spring bank.
One day of proper rain, low clouds, dull and everything. The following day it was quite blowy so we stayed put another night.
Other than that it was sunny and mainly hot.
It was distressing to hear that it was wet on the South Coast but we just endured the fine weather and SW 4 or 5. :)

Stu sounds like you picked the best and only Fortnight this year for a decent cruise. Sorry we left early last Sunday (lads 30th birthday) will catch up with you in a couple of weeks.

Take pity on me as I have to take the Bride, Mother, Future MIL and Bridesmaid shopping in Chester on Saturday.

B****y summer birthdays and weddings
ruin your sailing weekends..... and your bank account:eek::eek:

By the way all that sunshine must have been good for the tomato plants in the greenhouse!!!:D:D:D:D:D

You aren't kidding!! The last three years camping near Ullswater two weeks around the August Bank Holiday very very very wet indeed. Last year we gave up and abandoned the tent. This year giving Dorset a try but will probably get wet through and discover that the lakes became the valleys due to lack of rain.

Hey ho

I have the impression from most posters that they think it is a recent trend for bad weather in July and August.

I can hardly remember a dry late July or August in all the 20 years of family holidays in North Wales. It was more often than not wet and windy. Ideal for Abersoch dinghy week, Straits fortnight and late bank holiday racing. Trouble is I was usually the one in the tent that either leaked or blown away.

Roll on retirement then we can follow the other grey panthers who sail off mid June and come back September.

Failing that its on the trailer to the Ferry at Plymouth and go south next year.

It's the 1st of July tomorrow and guess what, an monstrous great depression is coming with it.

Tell me about it!

Just been sailing on "Huzzah" in Brittany for the last 5 weeks with loads of sun and some really hot sun and just a little bitty of rain!

And today, I'm back at work. How depressing!

(OK we had some really strong winds for a few days as well, so we had to sit in the cafes and wait for it to pass. It was hell.)

Skipper Stu, I'm delighted for you and I know EXACTLY how you feel having had 3 consecutive summer cruises in what can only be described (politely at least) as 'inclement weather'.

However, we returned yesterday from 3 weeks away and it only rained on the last Friday as we moved from inside St Peter Port's Victoria Marina to the outside pontoons in preparation for an early getaway the following morning. This was the only time we donned oilies in 23 days. Other then that, we had almost wall-to-wall sunshine for 3 weeks and some fabulous sailing to boot. The cruise took us from the Solent to Fowey, and then on via the Glenans as a passage stop to Piriac before returning in much slower time. S. Brittany was nice and quiet, all the harbours had space, many were still not on high season rates and the weather was settled enough to spend over a dozen nights anchored in lovely locations. Highlights? Well Hoedic was beautiful and peaceful, Pont Aven by dinghy - very pretty (if a little hot!) and the Etel River was well worth the stop. The only strong winds were coming back down the Solent yesterday!

Please can I book the same again for next year?

Oh yes, got boarded by French Customs 16 miles offshore too!
