there it wasn't.

Kim, what is your employers' trousers trouser strategy to both censoring and editing posts? - Is it legal whatsits because all posts are copyright IPC? or is it that you would really like to say but can't because of the legal beagals sitting behind your desk?

No matter what, may I say that IPC editing posts to IPC 'guidelines' or whatever is a serious NO-NO. No matter what IPC says anything that is posted is, with respect, still intellectual copyright of the author. Any editing of a posted post is breach of intellectual copyright.

Yes Nige the back of my hand still smarts from having a bit of a smack from Kim, I wouldn't have minded if I had said something derogatory or abusive but to get the chop for uttering another web address smacks a bit too much of Nazism dictatorship.

Re: don\'t think so

with regard to your issues, the rules and regs say

1. They/kim can make up there own standards of what's allowed/not allowed.
2. They can do what they like with material. If it's your ip, then use appriopriately. One can't spray grafitti on someone else's propertyand then claim the IP and require that it remain unedited, surely? imho.

I can understand why...

...there is a perceived need for censorship. After all there must be many commercial threats to YBW and after all being a commercial enterprise, it is only right that if you wish to promote another service or business, you pay the normal commercial rate.

Placing a web site address that would clearly be damaging to the success of YBW should be removed by judicious editing.

After all the average reader of YBW fora would NEVER be able to work out where these other sites were unless well meaning souls actually told them would they??

OR

Maybe it is about time that Kim took the axe to all of the signatures across his fora that promote web addresses...I certainly would construe that as promotion of a commercial venture for free, and think of all that advertising revenue they are missing out on!!!

As for Humperdincks thread ACTIVELY promoting a campaign in 'Sailing Today' (whoops said it again!!) that should be subject to the cutting room knife without further delay...think of all those people now rushing out to buy a rival publication subsequently boosting their ABC figures!

Where will it all stop??? I think we should be told!

Re: don\'t think so

I agree. When you write a letter to the editor of YM he/she can choose to publish it or bin it. This forum is YM's medium. The editor (Kim) doesn't see the letters until they're published then removes those that don't conform to requirements as he perceives them. Don't see much wrong with that. Should he interfere with material posted on your own web-site, however, the matter would be entirely different.

Oh for goodness sake...

a) don't know what you are talking about. I'm working out of the office and have chopped nothing in last day other than three posts deleted at the request of the user who posted them. There's nothing in the sin bin either and it is standard procedure for all moderators to put any suspended posts there so you'll have to enlighten me if you think something is missing;

b) some people here go off on one about censorship like they are struggling to emerge from oppressive state control. That's complete and utter tosh. Ninety nine point something per cent of all posts get left alone and we have our own reasons for acting when we do that are not unreasonable. Frankly you are branding us in a way we don't deserve;

c) read the Ts and Cs regarding copyright. It's all completely clear there and has been since day one. If you want to get into a boring exploration of copyright we can do so. That aside I hate to disappoint but I haven't got a legal eagle sat on one shoulder and a commercial director on the other - if you don't like the moderation blame me and not IPC;

d) if a post is edited (an incredibly rare event) it is marked as such - I could be sly but I'm not;

e) I suspect the vast majority of people using these forums are happy with the way they are run, otherwise we wouldn't see continual growth both in terms of people that use them and also the many more people that view them - sorry if that's a bit yah boo sucks but there it is.

For balance ...

I only mentioned the source of the article to which I was referring because otherwise it would have meant largely re-writing it.

I wasn't trying to wind anyone up with mentioning the other publication and, to be fair, I don't think there's any real competition between the two. I'd like to bet that most ST readers also buy YM, but NOT the other way around.

Re: Oh for goodness sake...

Kim,
I had the honour to be the very first Scuttlebutter to have a message pulled. (During the first week of the first incarnation of SB) . I didn't mind,,,,,,,,,,,, I had been very rude about a dishonest dealer. I had a nice e-mail from the then Ed pointing out the libel laws. Decent of him I thought.
Keep up the good work. ;)

I find his 'meanderings' one of the main attractions to both BBs!
However, some comments (not necessarily Nigel's) about BBs have been childish, and unfair to Kim.
