On cleaning the boat many tiny pieces of an off-white foam-like material were found around the base of the mast. Brain cells were expended; what foam is there on or in the mast and why should it be self destructing.
A forensic examination with the magnifying glass from the chart table revealed that the structure of the detritus was neither open nor closed cell foam but much more random. Furthermore some parts had traces of dark purple staining somewhat reminiscent of a cheap Burgundy. The ah-ha! moment came when we discovered a browner, harder part, crust.
We were looking at the remains of, probably, a blueberry scone or muffin. The surmise is that the item had been purloined by a gull and taken to our masthead for a leisurely snack which had been interrupted by a jealous fellow avian (or avians) with the result that pieces of the swag had fallen to earth, viz our deck.
If you have recently lost a blueberry scone or muffin in the Gosport area you can recover the ungulled portions from Haslar Marina's resident mullet.
