Well that's a first for me.

Pretty common way of selling non branded rope in the Med. Come across it in Spain, Italy and Greece. Most places they'll tell you how many metres to a kilo.

They catch on fast, here in Fethiye they sell by the kilo as matter of custom, then along comes the Brit who insists on metres and the clever ones out here quote the same price per metre as per kilo, Mr Brit who is used to UK rope and pricing pays readily and the seller thinks he has won the lottery!

Near the marinas all we see now is rope priced in metres, often in Euros, away from the marina its Kilos and lira. Often you CAN buy a specific length but then they weigh it to work out the price - local price!

There is usually/often a sticker on the drum that tells you how many metres and how many kilos, if not a quick trip to mr google will find this info.

My advice for what its worth is to buy in Kilos away from marinas - you will get a lot more line for your money.

Chain is sold by weight, but its funny that, for example 10mmx30mm chain varies in weight per metre depending upon the country you are in and the pricing structure.

Definitely the same in Italy.

It is difficult to compare length vs weight unless the drum has it printed on it. I need to replace a number of lines and asked some Italian 'old hands' at my club for similar advice. They told me that for 10mm nylon rope (Dyneema or similar) you get about 10-12m per kilo. This works out to somewhere between 70g and 100g per meter.

Clearly this is diameter and material dependent but a good rule of thumb.

Hope this helps.
