Been down to the boat today and all is white or ice. Winches frozen up, sheets like iron bars and the decks covered with maybe 4 inches of snow on top of a half inch of sheet ice. Somehow I dont think we will be racing on the 27th. :(

But on the other hand, the days are now getting longer and everything is on the up. It will soon be spring when every sailors mind turns to ............ sailing.

So a happy Xmas to all our readers and a prosperous New Year to boot. Now what shall I buy the boat as a Xmas present?

I'd buy 'er afloat either a gurt big spinnaker or a gurt big genoa. One of the reasons that places freeze is that there isn't enough wind (hence make the most of any light breezes you are gifted with in winter).

Cardiff Bay won't freeze in the summer because there is too much wind (small genoa country).

Note: higher temperatures can also lead to non-frozen water in summer: this is a secondary effect.

Race cancelled. Sea birds were standing on the ice floes in the middle of the bay! One guy reckoned he had walked round his boat - on the ice.

And I didnt even watch the cricket to cheer me up.
