Have to agree - this months copy was better.
But, then again, once you hit rock bottom the only way is up.
Who knows, if they keep this up, I might even renew my sub.
I've definately noticed it's a better read this month. I was given a copy of Y and Y last month and thought it was actually a really good read!! COuld be time for PBO to bite the dust.

Oh dear...out of step with everyone else yet again!
I have just kicked YM into touch finding this months worse than last months, so subscription cancelled...sadly Direct Debit was taken a couple of weeks ago, so I have got the next 6 months coming my way /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Having taken PBO on a casual basis over the years, must admit that since SN has taken the reigns, it has started to improve, so have just sent off my Direct debit for a subscription to PBO.
I know it is not one of the IPC stable, but ST seems to have rather lost the plot recently as well!
Shouldn't be too long now - if you count the pages of the last edition - there are actually more pages of adverts & classifieds than there are pages of articles.
I sadly admit to subscribing to one of 'em, and always buying the other two anyway.... suspect i'm not in a minority.....
To yet further prove that its all about taste, current interests etc... I actually thought this months YM was OK... PBO the same, but that ST was pretty good....
Everyone has a right to their opinion and feedback welcome but the forecast demise of Practical Boat Owner might possibly be considered a little premature?

Kim,
It's only my opinion of course, but once a mag contains more ads & classifieds than content the writing is on the wall. Maybe PBO should be let to slip quietly away in the night.
PBO's content can quite easily be covered in YM - don't see why there have to be 2 mags (or even 3 if you include YW).

Seeing that PBO is,by far, a bigger seller than YM, haven't you got your suggestion the wrong way round? After all, no other British Sailing magazine (or any kind of watersport magazine) has ever even approached a sale of 50,000 per month.
There is, of course, some overlap but both have their own loyal readers.
Sorry to correct you, Bob, but YM circulation peaked at 52,000 in the early nineties - admittedly this was the peak and PBO was over 60,000 at the time but I thought I'd just make the point.
As a journalist and former editor, I really shouldn't be saying this, but a goodly chunk of advertising is a healthy sign in a magazine, although it is not always appreciated by cynical readers.
As you guys never cease to point out, the advertisers pay our wages so the more ads we have, the more editorial pages we can afford. Many magazines have a ratio greater than 50-50 ad to ed
As long as the total number of editorial pages remains roughly the same, year on year or grows slightly, then the magazine can usually be considered healthy.
Having worked in mag production in the 1990s, I'd echo what James says. Most mags with an editorial:advertising ratio - if advertising drops, so does editorial. You'll probably find that YM/PBO has a set number of 90-100ish editorial pages per month like most mags and never goes below this - only it seems outweighed by ads if there's a lot of advertising in one particular month.
Most editorial teams could fill magazines ten times over if they could each month, but printing costs are such that advertising drives the page count.
