Now I realise I'm a bit late, but hey, the issue has to last me a whole month, so I take it slow.

I would like to refer the honourable members of this forum to the top right corner of page 117 of this months YM. Yes, it's the page on new from around the islands, dedicated to (as the title would suggest) Ireland, Schotland and Wales.

Luckily for me, the good people at IPC media have included a little map of the UK with the region highlighted, or my next holiday would apparently end up in the wrong place. It would seem that the powers that be have moved Schotland, Wales and Eire to the south west of England. Good, so now I don't have to travel that far to get my hands on some decent whiskey.

But wait, with the next page, YM has disproven the theory of relativity: two objects cán be in the same place at the same time. Because according to the little map in the corner, the South-West region is in exactly the same place as Schotland, Wales and Ireland. How typically British to have 4 names for the same geographical regions (well, I heard lots more of descriptive names for Liverpool once I was there, but as this is a family forum et al.)

You may notice that although there is one page devoted to Scotland, Ireland and Wales, well over half of the area of UK and with large and active sailing communities throughout, there is usually more than one page each devoted to areas that occupy less than a single county of England. There are several possible explanantions:

1. Yachting issues become less important the further they are from The Solent
2. YM operates on a very small travel budget
3. The local correspondents cannot write very quickly/often/much.
4. YM pays local correspondents at a distance-diminished rate
5. Only England matters in yachting journalism.
6. YM has a policy of not expanding its magazine sales.

Personally I would promote the idea to IPC that Scotland is way to far flung to warrant any further investigation other than a cursory mention of the Clyde and perhaps a reference to the golden nectar.. Why would I want the hoards visiting my favourite havens (not on the Clyde) with unprounouceable galic names (oh and don't ask Claysie and Jimi for translations of galic .. they're into the gorbal scots dialect../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I'd got stuck re-reading JJ on pages 90 - 93 and filching some of his copy for an article in another magazine.

More to the point, there's a titbit on Holyhead Marina, but nothing about the new lottery funded Clubhouse at Port Dinorwic ... a club that teaches and teaches would be aspirants that from time to time make to the top.

Yes...

and the bit about Holyhead Marina was not quite right - The poor sods lost the new pontoons. They were taken to the bottom of the Harbour by the barge sinking while putting them in place and new ones are on order
