Welding Ignorance - Help Please

Yes I had an oil filled oxford rt 140 that would weld all day at full current. As you say they seemed to be completely different from using a lightweight set of the same rated current. Blinking heavy to move it around so I sold it. Bought a Mig which was appalling other than for thin sheet and had to buy another transformer set for rods again.

Wish it was that easy.

I just have to drain sump, drain coolant, chain hoist to take engine weight, unbolt bellhousing, unbolt front engine mounts, slide engine foreward then remove sump.

The sump on my engine cannot be removed without removing the bellhousing.

Did think about epoxy but not sure. Also have to find a source for it.

Cheers

Iain

I find both arc and TIG welding quit easy and tthe key to get the skill to do reasonable welds is practice doing various types of joints and as you practice your skill and the quality if weld will increase.

Most people put too much weld on for the strength required but for what you are looking for thats OK

I have had various tyoes of welding machines from the SIP 140amp air cooled unit like iain (which got stolen)to oil cooled transformer to the unit I use now and 160 amp DC inverter set (see below the yellow box) I use for both TIG with argon for stainless and arc for both mild steel and stainless.

You can also see below some of the Items I made for my new steel yacht which includes welding stainless fittings on to the mild steel deck

for welding aluminium sepcial expensive equipment is generally needed so I use a local welder who has the special equipment required

The info on Lumiweld look interesting and I plan to investigate this next time I am in the UK
