A friend of mine says that sitting on a newspaper will prevent seasickness!!!

She says she gets seasick very quickly. She was told about this 'cure' and tried it on a recent cross channel ferry and did not get seasick at all.

Weird stuff!

Anyone else heard of this one, or other similarly strange seasickness cures.

Just goes to show that at least some of the time its psychological rather than physical.

One earplug or covering one eye seems to be the new cure...

That's very interesting. The most utterly immune-to-seasickness person I know is unilaterally deaf. Nelson was notoriously seasick at the start of every voyage, wasn't he? I wonder if it got any better after he lost an eye.

Copper bracelets, and also magnetic bracelets, are amusingly expensive. The high price makes people more determined to believe they work!

I used to be sick at the beginning of every Fart's Nest race, just off Hurst. Thereafter I reverted to being immune for the rest of the race.

Anything such as a tight collar will also create vestibular disfunction. So I never wear a tie when sailing.

According to today's paper, someone has launched sunglasses with one lens almost totally obscure to combat sea sickness. They are completely symmetrical so you can choose which eye to cover by turning them upside down. The inventor says he did extensive testing and is convinced of their efficacy.

Whoops he's given away his secret, now we know, so if anyone feels queasy, reach for the gaffer tape and cover one side of their shades! That must have been what Nelson was on about..
Now if the guy had claimed it was the quantum energy resonations, vibrating in harmony with the inner holistic balance chakras to destabilise the cosmic nausea pathways, he might have had a business proposal!

I think you may have been reading New Scientist Feedback page on use of "sciency" vocabulary. But they might have drawn the line at "resonations"! (Resonances?)

What no crystals?

BTW Does the newspaper have to be one that someone wants to read? It seems to work for pet cats wanting attention...

Cure for "lazy eye", cover the one with active muscles to force the "lazy" one to exercise.

Oh, right. Thanks for that.

Did it work?

Presumably it has been superseded by some hi-tech, expensive option which can only be administered by hospital consultants after the patient has been referred by the GP via the 'Lazy Eye Nurse Specialist'.
