i want to go all chain on my contessa 32 now that I have a windlass - but I'm worried about the weight of, say, 50m chain up front causing pitching. any views?
I'd still want some rope on the end of 50m of chain, so what's the gain?
Like any boat, try to keep the weight out of the ends if you want it to sail well.
But how much it pitches will depend on the length of sea etc, so unless you can ask a C32 sailor from your usual cruising ground you won't get much more than peoples prejudices- I've given you mine in good faith!
(get some 12mm nylon and a lump of lead just off the bottom is my approach-but I don't anchor enough to buy a windlass!)
You can always cut the chain and keep most of it in the bilge!
Cheers!
My main anchor and chain weigh around 95kg and I removed them for the autumn/winter racing series and replaced it with a bent pin, some plug chain and some twine (exageration!). In all I removed over 300kg of cruising gear - weighed as I threw it into the garage. I found a noticeable difference in reduced hobby horsing in short seas and possibly less submarining, not that we won anything in the dearth of wind that Oct - Dec produced up here every Sunday. All the gear, though, will be loaded back on for this season 'cos I use the anchor, need the spare water and diesel, would hate to do without the other two anchors and their warps, carry a heavy towing/dragging warp (just in case) , etc.
So my view, for what it's worth, is that the chain and anchor do slightly promote pitching but I'd much rather have them than not.
