the anti syphon fitting on my raw water cooled engine is weeping when running.
as this is positioned on the vertical surface on the inside of a galley storage locker it presents something of a problem "rusting cans or wet cardboard boxes" you gt the picture.
is it normal for these fittings to weep or is there a solution other than moving the unit.

Clean / service the valve. Replace it if it wont seal. Even replace it with the type that does not have a valve, and lead the discharge to a cockpit drain where you will always be able to see that it is working.

The real problems come not from one that leaks a bit but from one that fails to open when the engine is not running.

Mine also weeps - Volvo 2001. The instructions for the new seal say not to over tighten it (just a couple of ft lbs) so perhaps that is what I was doing wrong. Luckily mine only drips into the bilges under the engine.

If yours is like mine, unscrew the nut on top that has the upside down U-bend attached and inside you will find a tiny rubber disc which should have a small hole in it. Take care not to lose it! Clean this and the seating in water. Refit but not too tight! If you need/want to replace the disc you can get it from Keypart .

My U-bend has a long hose attached to lead any drips down into the bilge. Presumably you need to make sure the end is above any likely water level or the valve won't function. Perhaps you can do the same with yours?

Edit - I don't know why I am giving you advice as mine leaks! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Mine is a cheap 14 quid copy of the Vetus unit. It has a ball and spring, valve arrangement. After fitting, last year, it wept a bit and then settled down. If the end of the tube is reasonably clean and accessible, an occasional blow down the end(so to speak) will confirm/ help ensure that the valve is unseating itself when the engine is shut down.

Its important to service such a unit once a year, it is fail dangerous ie you wont know its failed until you've got serious problems. Engines hate compressing water!

All volvo AS valve leak, part of the design for maintainence expense, the little rubber disc is made of gold if the replacement part cost is any indication. I now have the Vetus unit generally no problem, with the outlet led into oversize pipe to drain to bilge if necessary.
