WEEKEND SAILING FORECAST
Issued: 1030hrs Thursday 7th April 2005
FRIDAY
I've included two charts above. The left is the usual pressure chart, the right is the 500mb chart (about 18000ft). The reason I've included both is that the 500mb flow is going to be the key to the weather forecast for Friday. High pressure is west of Ireland, with low pressure over northern Sweden. This is bringing a cold northerly flow through the British Isles. The 500mb chart shows a deep trough in the 500mb flow extending through the British Isles, and this is the reason for heavy showers on Friday.
So there will be strong winds in many areas, with a risk of gales in the east. Heavy showers through Scotland, northern and eastern parts of England, with a high risk of thunderstorms and hail. To the west the showers will tend to become more scattered through the day, although there will be heavy ones in the morning. Thickening cloud and outbreaks of light rain into northwest Scotland in the late afternoon and evening as a warm front approaches.
Winds N 25-35kt (F7-F8) in the east, 20-30kt (F6-F7) in the west, 15-25kt (F4-F5) in Ireland.
SATURDAY
Both charts are included once again above. The 500mb trough has moved eastwards to be through Scandinavia and into western parts of the Mediterranean.
High pressure will be to the southwest of Ireland, with a west to northwest flow through the UK and Ireland. Fronts extended eastwards with the flow, with a broad warm sector covering Scotland, Ireland and northern England.
So plenty of cloud and some outbreaks of rain and drizzle across Scotland and the northern parts of Ireland. Mist and fog on western coasts, with some heavier rain here later.
More southern parts of the country will have broken cloud in the morning. This should break to give bright spells in the Midlands and southern and southeast England. Western areas of Wales and England will have cloud and outbreaks of rain and drizzle.
Winds will be W-WNW 18-25kt (F6), perhaps 25-30kt (F6-F7) in western Scotland and Northern Ireland at times.
SUNDAY
High pressure northwest of Spain at midday on Sunday. A warm front moving eastwards across Scotland in the afternoon, with a westerly flow covering all parts of the country.
There will be cloudy conditions and drizzle and rain across most of north and west Ireland and Scotland. Rain may be heavy across western Scotland wit a risk of gales here.
The west of Wales and southwest England may have mist or fog patches on coasts. Inland there could be cloud and some drizzle in the Midlands and northern England in the morning. Becoming brighter here for the afternoon with sunny spells coming through in the south.
Winds will be W 10-17kt (F3-F5) in the south, 20-25kt (f6) in the north, but 25-30kt (F6) in western Scotland.
