Had they heard of reefing?I see so many people that either don't put the sails up at all or who do not reef when they should do it sometimes makes you wonder.

Good one! Being overcanvassed is not supposed to cause a dismast, at worst a broach or a dip. Clearly the rig wasn't correctly tuned, which is typical on most charter boats.

BTW that is a Beneteau First 40 from the Sunsail fleet.

The same boat that we watched broaching its way down Southampton water on Saturday. How many times do you need to broach before you decide to reef?

Wonder if the backstay bust?
What with the mast creasing at the gooseneck and all......

I was wondering if the shock of an accidental gybe causing backstay failure did it.
It was about F6 at the time. Conditions had calmed down by the time they got in plus entrance to Cowes was quite sheltered.

Most likely cause, given that its a Sunsail boat and therefore would be sailing/racing in close proximity to other Sunsail boats is that it clashed rigs. Very easy to do racing windward/leeward courses and upwind / downwind boats get a bit to close.

Unlikely to be caused by broken backstay as on most modern fractional rigs they are a tuning devise and not used to hold the rig up.

This is typical of this forum. A boat is dismasted. Not the end of the world but the comments so far are criticising them for not reefing and criticising them for getting help from a lifeboat. Even though those criticising know all the circumstances.
Maybe they were not reefing on purpose? Perhaps they were learning how to control the boat while very overpowered or sailing through strong gusts.
Does every boat that heads into coastal and protected waters such as the Solent need to be 100% self-reliant? They had a dismasting and maybe needed some help. It also looks like they were towed in.

Stereotypical (anti charter) prejudice

Clearly the rig wasn't correctly tuned, which is typical on most charter boats.

Two wild assumptions in one throwaway sentence. Good to see a high standard of debate still to the fore on the ybw forums.
