Weekend at Haslar

The problemis that there are two distinct, and incompatible, types of food available.

I find nowadays that people either sit in the "pile it high and charge me tuppence" camp or the "better than Gordon's at Claridges old chap" camp.

If you want a cheap hearty meal go to The Castle. It wasn't fantastic when I went but perfectly edible. However, if you want quality rather than quality and expect to pay accordingly then take the ferry over to Gun Wharf ( though even there you won't find what I would class as good food ). Never tried the Brasserie at Lee-On-Solent but have heard good things about it. Also the Alverbank Hotel in Alverstoke would be a short taxi ride and that was excellent when I was there last year.

Landers is shut for refurbishment and the Lightship is also closed, or at least was a couple of weeks ago.

The chinese above the chipshop is OK if you don't mind lashings of MSG and sunset yellow food colouring. Mind you I'm biased, having been a Singapore resident for several years and now know what it is supposed to really taste like.

The Lightship is open at the moment and as far as I'm aware has no plans to close . Landers is now under new management and is closed for re-furbishment. It should re-open towards the end of next week with Andy behind the bar and Craig in the kitchen. I will be glad when it does as The Castle is not what it used to be.

I have to defend the Castle. When I first went there about four years ago, the walls were adorned with cap-tallys, it stan of smoke and the food was pretty poor. We used to go just for the beers. I didn't go again for years until the night after a race weekend (I forget which one) in August or September and I was suprised that it was suggested, but it was ok. THe service was friendly and although the food was nothing to write home about, it was perfect to finish of a long, knackering and boozy weekend.

Mary Mouse a touch less burger food now..new owners.

Try ferry to Pomopey, then short taxi or loner ( 30 min0 walk to Bridge tavern, old Portsmouth. Great place, good food and near camber so plenty to look at.

I keep my boat at Gosport Marina, and the New Bengal indian restaurant at 27 Stoke Road is the best place I've found to eat in Gosport. It's a bit of walk, which sharpens the appetite. Probably about 3/4 mile from Haslar.

Location here.

I'll second that, its the only Indian in Gosport worth eating in, though I haven't tried the Cafe Garlic Indian Buffet yet!
