Webcams - what kind of costs involved?

Have spent part of this morning viewing various webcams from Poole, Calshot and Hayling, as well as the only static one, Southwater Marine's, I can find for the Hamble River. Is it a costly project to install and maintain live feeds for viewing?

With the recent increase locally of boat and gear theft I'm surprised that there are no Harbour Commissioner operated cameras in various locations, on their own pontoons at Hamble and Warsash and, say, just before reaching the Universal and Premier marinas.

I'd rather like to see that all is well on my boat especially after the current stormy weather,as this would save a round trip to Hamble from Fareham for instance and for other Hamble moorings residents I'm sure who live much further away.

I have to admit that Hamble Harbourmaster staff have contacted me promptly when things have occurred previously; a static collision by a larger sailing yacht, and an insecure bottom shackle on the ground chain left unlocked by the contractor when re-laid.

From a building with power and Internet, no. You can spend (from memory) around £150 for something that will plug in and just work. If you don't mind some fiddling around you can do it for much less - say £15 for a camera plus an old PC that's essentially worthless and should be scroungeable for free.

The difficulty for watching boats emerges when you want to put cameras on pontoons, piles, etc and need to get power and network to them.

As prv says as long as you have power and network it is very easy.

I use these in vulnerable/elderly persons homes and get excellent results.

To see one working go to the live camera section. The one in Penryn is working now. Although wait for daytime.

I know someone that is testing a GSM version that sends a series of stills so will post on that in the future.

I have no connection to any of them.

I have a webcam that's wireless and only requires 5v power so can hook into a remote wifi signal.

What's more it can be controlled remotely from a standard browser through pan and tilt so one can look around at things. cost about £100. The addition of a suitable dome would make it a good outdoor unit.

There's one similar for under £50 here

Seems like it would may also be possible with a solar panel power source, just the wi-fi link perhaps via Local clubs at Warsash and Hamble,or the various marinas themselves. Food for thought at the next Hamble River Moorings Users meeting.

Thanks for the references and helpful info.
