Webasto or Eberspacher???

Had 2 Webasto units in different boats for 6 years. Never had a service or a problem. I seem to hear of more people having problems of one kind or another with Ebers, which is why I continue to go the Webasto route.

Clearly just one persons experience, but if you can get the damn search engine to work, you will be able to make your own judgement on which suffers most problems.

David,

Good spot. Only ever had a cursory look for Webasto stuff as I have an Eber. So, the OP should go with whatever takes his fancy (based on initial cost, spares cost, spares availability, location of service agents for when you can't fix it yourself). Don't suppose you know if Mikuni manuals are available - my "neighbour" has one of these and spent a cold Christmas waiting to get it fixed?!

Satisfied owner of an AirTop Webasto 3500.

Get the programmable timer, so you wake up to toasty tootsies, and try and afford the insulated pipework, as it is loads more efficient.

Unless my memory plays tricks Jerry there is, I recall it even had some kind of a fault finding flow chart, I will see if I can find it again.

I wuz right but only about the flow chart bit here it is in case it helps.

Back to the OP I do find the Webo a bit more reliable, they are a doddle to fix and bits are a bit cheaper, as I think somebody already said, an exhaust silencer makes the world of difference, as does a combustion air intake silencer.

Have the Webasto 3500 for 10 years now; never been serviced and starts every time. Spoke to Webasto agent about service/ maintenance and was advised to run it every few weeks at full heat for 1 hour. Nothing else needed.

Just to balance the opinion and make it harder for you to choose, my Eberspacher has worked faultlessly for 10 years and is just going for its first service only because it has got a bit smokey on startup this winter (and stopped on Saturday).

Whilst it should have been serviced more often, all the advice I got was run it hot and long - which is what I did!

Is 10 years to first fault good?

Cheers

I am going to have to bite the bullet next year as my Eber is knackered, spoke to a supplier I know and asked him which was best, not which was more profitable for him, and he said that they have less warranty problems with the Webasto, so you take your choice, but I am probably going to go for a webasto next time.

Agreed.

I fitted a Webasto 3500 myself several years ago and have lived aboard for the last 4 winters with no problems. In fact, sitting here in Corfu we have it blasting away right now. It's been 6 degrees C out there.

It was time consuming but not difficult to fit, and as was said, the only treatment required was to fire it up once a month, although to be honest we don't do it that often during a Greek summer.

Thanks for all the replies. It seems that Webasto is the one to go for but I have just seen another consideration. At 11.5 metres LOA, I am on the limit for the Eber 4kw but the equivalent Webasto is rated at 3.5 kw, maybe it won't be powerful enough. We will be installing 6 outlets
