Webasto Heater

Experienced a problem this weekend with the heater which has given stirling service all winter. The heater goes thro' the start-up routine but fails to ignite and eventually closes down. Had a look a the manual, but apart from suggesting to switch on and off and check the overheating overide nothing. Anybody got any hints/fixes before I call the service man in?

<font color=blue>Don't panic Mr Mainwaring. Webasto are renowned for this. After a certain period in their life Webasto's take two or even three spins before they fire up. This is quite normal and I regret to say that short of a major service its something you will have to live with.

Usually caused by build up of carbon on glow plug unscrew it and clean carefully, this problem gets worse if you only run heater for short periods.

Try

Cleaning or (preferably) replacing the glow-plug - your problem sounds as tho' that's the cause

I also find that I have to have the battery charger on or the engine running as the damn glow plug takes about 40 amps, then it will start - usually at 3 spin.

However - next time I go down to the boat I'll try cleaning the glow plug. - The unit is 1975 - so not bad that it is still working!

Thanks for the respose, am going down this weekend so will try the various suggestions and hopefully will solve the problem.

Also check for no air in the fuel, a blocked fuel filter, or air inlet obstruction. If it's none of those, or a plow-plug fault, it could be the temperature sensor. These have been known to just 'die' for no apparent reason over winter periods. Check the other bits first though.
