Webasto exhaust silencer - help please

I was going to fit a silencer to our warm air diesel fired heater at the weekend. Out of idle interest (and self preservation) I blocked one end (outlet) of the silencer with my thumb and blew in the other end (the idea being a pressure test to make sure there was no leaks). I was mighty surprised when there was clear passage of air to a third outlet. There is a hole (in the join of the two part body) of about 2mm diameter where air is free to pass. The hole appears to be entirely intentional - this is a brand new unit and is undamaged; the aforementioned hole appears to have been designed in to the unit.

So; why does the hole exist? In my simple mind this hole will allow noxious gas to escape from the exhaust system in to the boat. I abandoned fitting the unit until I had sought guidance from others more wise than I - can anyone shed any light?

I think that it's a water drain.

That seems sensible - but what is to stop the noxious gas escaping with the water?

Looking at the manual, I think a coil is supposed to be attached and filled with water.See page 11 of manual (download from site).

Page 15 shows the coil as a "condensation drain off".

Just fitted mine at the weekend....just left with a red fuse and about 2 foot of maybe 25 mm dia pipe? Any ideas?

The 25mm dia pipe - is it flexible steel? If so it sounds like the exhaust pipe?

See reply to your other post re fuse. The pipe is probably the inlet combustion air pipe---so you can take the air from a distance from the unit itself.

Its not exhaust hose, just small ducting hose with a platsic mesh end.

In my Eberspächer the hole is a water drain !
