I have a Webasto heater that was on the boat when we got it, it apparently hadnt been run for quite some time. I had a play with it today, cleaned up the electrical connections, stripped the unit apart and cleaned out the combustion chamber. Got bucket fulls of rust and soot from it. Put it all back together and ........ someting happened. A fan thing came on, the glow plug got hot and smoke came from the exhaust, it still didnt produce any heat though, anyone got any ideas as to what I should try next .....

I dont know how old the unit is but its a blue colour with a rotateing switch with a couple of red lights on it.

I have spoken to Webasto about the unit for what good it did me, they didnt have any information on my unit, but they did say they'd sell me a new one for about £1500, I know I can get a secondhand one from Ebay but i'd rather not if this one can be fixed

Regards

Andy

Try it again, and again.

I normally have to try to start mine a couple of times before it goes.

Full power off and on between each one.

Make sure your battery is in full charge as it takes a lot of current to start up.

was the fan that pushes the hot air into the cabin working, or was it only the combustion side that was working, in which case it would stop very quickly. The hot air fan is really a method of cooling the combustion side and if it is duff, then a thermal cut-out will stop it.
The other alternative is that there may be a count on the number of times the system will allow you to attempt to start without actually starting. This is to avoid a back-up of unburnt fuel in the exhaust and a possible explosion! The eberspacher has one of these and needs to be reset by the service agents if the count is exceeded. It is possible that this happened before you got hold of it.

Therefore suggest check if fan working, if not - fix it, if it is, check with webasto wether they have this count system, and if so how to resolve it.

The fan that came on appears to be the only fan. Its located on the inlet side and blows air thru the unit. When I turn the dial switch to the start position, nothing happens for about 2 minutes, then the fan comes on, the fuel valve opens and a few seconds later smoke appears from the exhaust. Only thing is its not chucking out any heat from the outlet end, only cool air that the fan on the inlet end blows thru.

had one of those on my Broom Crown, rotating switch thingy wait till it comes round then it should fire up , often didnt and got fed up with it. Fitted a new one via Kris Kruisers on the Thames, webasto agent, did cost about £1400 but for quite a big boat three cabins etc. Worth it in the end as fuss free from then on

If all else fails, there's a good webasto place in Plymouth that did a good job on sorting mine out -- not horribly expensive either....

Things to check -- voltage, obstructions to inlets and outlets, state of teh glowplug -- is it coked up at all?

Hi Andy
Had a problem with my Webasto heater a couple of times, it was difficult to start and at one point would fire up but ran cool, have you cleaned the diesel spinner tubes? one of mine was blocked with carbon and once that was cleared it started and ran with no problem

UPDATE

I finaly got it to work !!

I had to strip the unit down again to clean out the diesel spinner tubes, also had to get a new pipe made up to run from the fuel switch to the heater, (the threaded bit had snapped off) apparently they dont make that part any more. After rebuilding the b****y thing for the umteenth time I hooked it up to a battery and fuel, turned the switch and ....... it worked! I ran it on parafin at first to give it a bit of a clean out, apart from smoking a lot for a few minutes it then ran perfectly, full heat, half heat the works !!!!!

<one very happy chappie
