Just finished installation of ducting, and now the dam unit wont work; definitely was before. It gives the ' wont start after two efforts' error message. Fuel is getting in, and being burnt, as there is smoke form the exhaust. I've checked electrical connections, fuel level, battery power. Any ideas before i ring the supplier on monday?

On a further point, i bought this unit as i thought it would be quiet. It isn't. The loud ticking noise from the pump will quickly become very irritating. Bear this in mind before buying. Whilst the manufacturer may maintain the unit itself is quiet, they dont meniton the 'stepping' fuel pump, which is very intusive. You have been warned!! Perhaps more insulation is required, but if had known this might be an issue, i wouldn't have bought one.

First suspect given your description would still be power as there is quite demand on start up.
maybee you have disloged a connection a bit.
Does this unit have the dreaded 3 strikes and your out palaver or is that just some Eberspachers?

No 3 strikes out, it just gives up after 2 attempts and resets itself. You can have as many goes as you like. I had shore power on,had been running the battery charger and eventually put the engine on to be sure of battery charge. All seems fine. I'll recheck the connections.

Is the burner air intake blocked? Sorry to hear of your troubles. I have recently installed one and I think it is a very good unit. The pump does tick but not a problem in my boat. A rubber mount for the pump may do the trick.

I installed one on my last boat. Keep going - they are very reliable units.

As regards the fuel pump ticking, it comes on a rubber mount, which is not thick enough - especially when mounted on a large bulkhead. I reduced - but didn't elimenate the ticking by mounting on an old piece of ply sikaflexed to a bulkhead. Used quite a thick splodge of sikaflex and this really reduced what was a quite annoying sound. After that hardly heard the heater at all.

[Note to myself]. Really must do this with the Eber.[/Note to myself]

If the pump is being quite noisy, then it probably has air in it. Once full of fuel it will return to a gentle tick.

Air in the fuel may also account for the unit cutting out.

Make sure the pump is mounted vertically (outlet upwards), or up to 45 degrees off vertical.

I recently fitted a propex gas heater and it had the same problem. It turned out to be two problems,

first, the voltage drop between battery and propex unit was too much, cleaning fuse/switch connections, new heavier cables and more direct route cured this.

Second, I had exceeded the max flue length and the pressure sensor sees this as a blockage. Shorter flue sorted this as well.

Although completely different unit it might still give you some ideas.

Also the propex unit is very noisy as well, guess the choice is hot/noise or cold/quiet.

As already state, air in the pump will cause both of your problems. You need to bleed all the air out to the input of the heater. To do this connect a separate 12v supply to the pump terminals but only connect 1 wire. the second wire is then tapped at speed on the second terminal. This will pulse the pump and you sould see the air bubbles in the clear fuel pipe. Keep going until it clears. If you leave the fuel line connected to the heater while you do this fuel will build up in the heater and cause a lot of white smoke until it's all burnt off. I prefer to disconnect the pipe at the heater catching the spilt fuel in a jar. Good luck.

ok, thanks for the tips, i'll give it a go. Did put it through several restart cycles to try and get it going, maybe 5 goes, which is 10 attempted starts, might not be enough to bleed pump but thought it would be

Make sure the plastic cover where the wires come out is securly fitted to the heater. I left mine off whilst testing it after installation and it would not start. Put the cover on and bingo 1st go. Something to do with airflow??
