Dear all (especially techie types, Roger etc)

We are now in Lisbon en route to Gib pre Atlantic and the Carribean and would like to put our pics and stories on the web. How can we get free web space to do it?
Bearing in mind it has to be done from an internet cafe. I had a ukonline account but to upload you had to dial in via them. Not possible in the cafe. Any ideas??

Thanks steve,

You will laugh at my shorts.

Can you actually put up a personal site with linked pages here?

Good luck with the Moody. We went from brand new french production boat to 19 year old brit westerly. No regrets.

All you need to do is position the mouse over the address, right click the mouse, select copy.

Start your post here, when your ready to put your link on the post (Leave a space!); Right click mouse, select paste and hey presto the addy will come up on your post. All people need to do is click on the addy and we're there (Sniggering like schoolboys at your sunburn and envious as hell we're not there too!)

Good luck!

Steve.

Most companies who give you free webspace want you to use their dial-up number to dial in to FTP to it. Not surprising really - why should they give you something for absolutely nothing? At least they make a few hundredths of a 'p' per minute on the phone call.

Most of the companies offering something for nothing on the web have now either gone bust or converted existing freeloaders to paying customers.

If you want to set up a website why not set up your own server and pay a little money for it? If you can afford to sail the Atlantic you can afford to pay a little for your vanity publishing.

Ive noticed that several folks here are hosting their forum proiflile pics with Tripod.
It would appear that Tripod wont let an external site 'call' a picture from Tripod, thats why the Tripod logo appears instead.
You might like to upload your piccies to my Boaters Gallery where there is a special section for Profile pics........

Re: Tripod.com

Yeah, should change that. Apparently, tripod doesn't allow files to be downloaded by another site (referals).
Understandable: you could open a low capacity commercial site, and use the tripod bandwith to host all your images. Now, what kind of website would need 50Mb of images ?

Re: Web space / storage ...

You could use a Web Virtual drive .... password the files uploaded and then promulgate the access login ... that way you don't have to FTP, you can access the files from any Internet available PC, upload / download, edit etc. without HTTP knowledge etc. etc.

I use it for my company to promulgate templates around my offices ... saves the large e-mails and attachments - I just upload via internet to the site. Satelite office then has access to latest files etc. by accessing same site using login info. Some sites actually allow you to set multiple access logins to same storage, with main one having edit rights.

I'm using Tripod.com for my hosting. Yes it is free but you have to put up with the advertising. However, if you are willing to pay a few $US a month then you don't get the ads. You can use the Tripod upload/download facility, but I prefer to use FTP.
If you have digital images it would not be too much trouble to tranfer them to a CD/floppy disk and upload from that. I don't understand why you can't upload from an Internet cafe, unless the computers have the CD/floppy drives removed. In that case buy yourself an external CD drive and attach to the computer in the Internet cafe.
If your photos are not digital you will need to have them scanned before uploading.
One word of advice before uploading your images get them optimised for the web i.e. to a medium JPEG format, otherwise your uploads will take forever, and it will cost you.
Good luck and hope to see some pics of your adventures.

Re: Raggies as well

My Boaters Gallery and Profile-Pics parking area is open to anyone on the ybw forums. All I ask is that you try and stick to the simple rules re image size and dont clutter up the site with too many meaningless pics. You can even have your own album page if you register and send me an email - that will let you upload and delete pics on your page and you will have a url to post in messages or give other people you want to see your pics.
