I plan to do a bit of chartering next year and instead of boring crappy expensive paper brochures i thought it wd be better to have a nice websitey brochure so agents can refer peeps to that. The idea this time will be that it is anonymous so no contacts o prices, just guff about the boat. I'll do the text and pix and already have the site but i need a webby person to make it all nice and erm webbish. But not too webbish. There's no selling or database frexample, just text and pix, max 5 pages. Of course, i know loads of putery peeps but no webdesigners as such. If anyone has a contact, pls PM me. If it's you, then lemme know what sort of fings you do and point me to a smartish looking site BUT nothing that looks home-made and clunky. It needs to use flash, i think. Oh, and also the web designer can have long hair, but it's not important.

Forgive me to having my threepennyworth but a web site without contacts is like a car without wheels. There's bound to be questions that cannot be answered by your agents, without referring to you anyway, maybe a telephone number for a messaging service, but some method of influencing future business in case the customer finds you via a search engine, or even via a mention here.

I started out with a PO Box number but actually it doesn't work (in my view). If I can't be open about who I am and where I am why should people send me money. I realise it's a bit simplistic, and your proposed business is very different, but I had so many negative comments that I ended up reversing everything.

I think a real name and address helps a lot, it doesn't have to be home.

Hi,

I am writing from DCSL Internet, a web development company in Aldershot. We'd be delighted to help you. Our web address is http://www.dcsl.com/internet.asp. We have created hundreds of web sites, small and large, for many companies over the past decade. A couple of examples are http://www.tds-saddlers.com or for a smaller site http://www.arlingtonrecruitment.com.

If you'd like to discuss, please give me a call on 01252 333373.

Thanks
Nick Thompson

i agree. Ecept that this really is a brochure: there are loads of agents, all with a customer in front of them and the only valuablething they know is the clients name and address. If they steer them to a site where the customer could shortcircuit them- they won't promote. So, it has to have no contacts. Or of course, cut out the agents. But if you were after a boat but reallty knew SOD ALL about boats - you wd probaly go to an agent, not direct.

Try www.purplewave.co.uk. He's a friend of mine and does web design part time so he's cheap and he's a keen sailor. There's a link to the Dart 18 Worlds website on there which he designed as he used sail Darts until last year.
There's a contact link on their too and having already spoken to him he would be happy to assist.

Re: Double damn!

Otherwise you could have made an offer for a secondhand web site, not very old, but unused so VGC.

PM on it's way with another contact to try.

Job done!

Oooh a very similar boat too. Even down to the detailed inventory (PS2). TCM could save himself a few £££ and clone the whole site and just change the name Harry to Diana

I reckon that half of the world's web designers are just people who can't or can't be arsed to get a proper job!

Anyway, have you seen a site that would give us a flavour of what you're after? Do you want the whole site in flash (slow) or just a flash intro?

Re: Arrgh!

No flash please. The minute I see flash, I think nincompoop. Unless it's an arty farty thing.

Any commercial site, of any sort, even if not providing contacts, should not use Flash. Total turn off!

purely IMHO of course!
