I have an SSB receiver on the boat and understand that by using a program such as JVComm32 it is possible to receive weather fax charts and display them on the laptop. I have never tried this, so would like to ask if anyone has and is JVComm32 a fairly easy program to use, or can you recommend an alternative? Thanks.

jvcomm, fldigi and others are very easy to use. The headphone or line out from the SSB receiver connects to the MIC or line IN on the laptop (though not all laptops have analogue audio inputs).

The jvcomm.de website has sound samples so you know what to listen for.

However, there are fewer and fewer transmissions to listen to these days, so it's as well the software is generally free or open source.

Has anyone used any weather fax software with SSB on a small tablet computer? Tablets are so cheap these days that it seems like a better option than using a laptop.

I have used HF Weatherfax and Droid navtex on a samsung android phone and Tablet. Both work well, getting a decent wetherfax signal was the most difficult part of the game since my aerial was not good.

Bruce Danforth started an excellent thread about weatherfax reception
