Visibility - Poor.

Re: Weather tonight in the Western Approaches!!

Wave height out there currently 15 metres.

It "may" dip around the SW coast of Ireland and hit Cornwall but hard to say at moment.

Here's hoping it fizzles out.

Re: Weather tonight in the Western Approaches!!

I like the 'phenomenal'! Lets hope no one is stuck out there. Was forecasting F12 Hurricane force yesterday in Shannon. Nasty.

Re: Weather tonight in the Western Approaches!!

Peaks so far

Western approaches reach a peak at 09:00 of 38Kn (F8) gusting to 63kn (64 is hurricain so only 11!!) waves reached 12.7m (thats 41ft...ouch) with a 13sec period

South wales, Turbot bank about 5 miles seaward from me - Peak at 0600 but only 38kn (F8) gusting 53kn (10) with wave hight of 8.3m & period 10s, a shade under 27ft!!! a good 10ft higher than would be expected presumably because its the first shoal between here and S america. Now down to F7-F9 at 9pm but its picked up again since then so we will see if the worst is over

The system earlier seemed to then go along the channel with the highest winds on the back of the low as the pressure is rising.
09:00 Channel lt vessel recorded 57kn with gusts of 76kn, Thats F11 but gusts well into hurricain strength though waves only at 6.8m mear babies of 22ft
18:00 Seven Stones 56kn gusting 77Kn but wave hight peaked much ealier - 12m @ 09:00

Where did this come from, seems a bit late in the season for an old hurricain?

Re: Weather tonight in the Western Approaches!!

Yeah all at the time someone is trying to get me to do a delivery from Cardiff to the South coast and wondering why I am so 'overcautious' about the weather. "surely we could just motor round if its too windy to sail" Ho hum.

Re: Weather tonight in the Western Approaches!!

I spent quite a while Sat night checking warps and boatyard props, doubling up lines etc, in anticipation of a big blow, but we only got a few 30kn gusts up this end of the Bristol Channel. It petered out Sun morning - a damp squib fortunately. Glad I wasn't trying to run for M Haven, going from the Turbot data!

Doing my Level 2 power this week, so I hope the weather is nice /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Will make a change to do more than 8 kn through the water, hope I don't get scared /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Weather tonight in the Western Approaches!!

'Fujifilm' Class 40 race yacht returning from Canaries entered Brixham at approx 0600 hrs sunday morning. Reported surfing at 20knts under bare poles, big seas nearly 30ft high. Crew were reportedly 'wired' on arrival in Brixham.
