Well at Chichester it was consistent. No less than 30 knots on the bar all day pretty much SSE. Score: Weather 1, Our boat nil. Boat remains at Chi Marina for the night, some night sailing tomorrow to bring her back to Haslar since HW is around 1700.

John

Be extremely cautious leaving Chi Harbour with the wind in the current quarter, especially on the ebb.

We came back into Chi on Sat only 2 hours after the wind had began to build. The tide was still on the flood but we were surprised how much swell there was across Hayling Bay and on the approach to West pole.

Strong wind East of SW or West of ESE will create dangerous conditions.

Stephen

Yes - agree totally. We came in at around 1100 at West Pole on Saturday and Hayling Bay especially about 2 miles from West Pole was not nice - basically from 1000 the wind kept building. We were in Emsworth for two years, so I know the bar. We will get out tomorrow, and yes it will be unpleasant, but once out we'll be fine. Appreciate your advice - thanks. If anyone wants a fun sail - Chi Marina about 1530!

I'm sure you know what your doing but are you realy certain about this?

Selsey Bill to Lyme Regis (to 1800 Monday)

24 hour forecast: South or southwest 5 to 7, occasionally gale 8 at first. Rough becoming moderate. Rain then squally showers. Moderate or good, occasionally poor in rain.

(from 1800 Monday)

Outlook: South or southwest 5 to 7 decreasing 4 then backing east, veering southwest 5 or 6 later. Moderate becoming slight. Rain or showers. Moderate or good, occasionally poor in rain.

If you MUST leave, leave Chi marina at 14.00, no later, that will give you a bit of slack at West pole between 15.00 and 15.30, but it will still be ROUGH with the forcast as it is!

Did he go I wonder? Chimet was giving 30 knots SE for most of yesterday afternoon. Our planned weekend away was cut short and we went home on Saturday evening.

Galadriel:

Hi Stephen

We went yesterday - (Monday) as planned

We came through Chi Marina lock at 1530 into a rainstorm. Double reefed main went up at Thorney Channel, and were able to lay West Pole by motor sailing. Arriving at West Pole 1630. Tide was slack and just going west. This was the winner on the way out.

The Winner

Killed the motor about a cable off West Pole and had a cracking sail across some big waves going through us. Dropped the main off Langstone as we weren’t really getting any drive, and carried on at the same pace under jib but less pressed.

We were seeing gusts of 27/28 apparent. It was now dark and we creamed through main passage and into Portsmouth on the last of the flood (0.3 of tide still with us) and fetched up into Haslar bang on HW at 1800. Great trip! We saw only one other boat and that was coming into Chi - although it looked like there was a school boat that was about to go out of Portsmouth.

Sounds like you had a good sail, John. Glad to hear it all worked out, its not a sail I would make out of choice, I still think you have been very lucky.

I am glad that in proving me wrong you have made a safe passage.

Short stay at Chi Marina is VERY expensive so earliest opportunity to go was what was needed!

We have no problems in the winds presented yesterday especially off the beam - although it was rolly off the Bar and Langstone.

In our couple of years in Emsworth, we have been out to West Pole in worse conditions. Yesterday there was enough East in the wind to motor sail, so we only slammed once, whereas we have had trips out where we slammed on just about every wave.

Out of interest, I have always worked on arriving at West Pole 1.5 hours before HW Portsmouth - seems to work for me. (Going West of course!) I think I may have misled you in my original post as I think I said 1700 HW when in fact it was 1758 which was what my calcs were based on.

John

The time that you left there would still have been some flood running into Chi harbour, so with the wind behind it you had wind with tide. I was concerned that if you left when the ebb started you would have seen a very different sea at the bar!!!

High water at Chichester Bar is about 25 mins later than Portsmouth. The Westerly flow at West Pole starts 2 hours before HW Portsmouth. But before this for a short time there is a little slack in the flow.
