What are the thoughts of the panel on the Weather in the Solent / Poole area for this weekend?

Seem to be getting conflicting reports on the web. Most sites saying 16 - 20mph Easterly / North Easterlies, then a couple predicting 10 - 15mph in same directions.

Small fleet of us (Squaddy 58, F43, 2 x S41's) had arranged to sally over from Hamble to Poole for the weekend, what would you all advise? I must be getting old but this wind, weather forecast thing really has got me absolutely flummoxed.

I know on the day whether its right or not but trying to predict it etc, seems to be full of pitfalls and misinformation. Would value your opinions so that we can give, Marinas, Restaraunts etc plenty of notice to cancel our reservations. I normally err on the side of caution 2-3 days before, cancel, then when I get to the boat, blue skys & flat calms!! Who's forecasts would you all trust the most?? Also in these boats what would you say was comfortable, in "F" terms. (That is Force3 = F3, terms, etc. Not the other one!)

I suppose this post sort of relates to one earlier in the week about pre booking and the nightmares Marinas must face??

Thanks in advance.

Hi Paul N to NE would be better at those wind speeds as mainly off the land, lot better than SW on the nose. F 3-4 in aforementioned direction should be no probs for that line up CGN

Yes, they shouldn't have any problems. Did Poole and back in a Easterly F5/6 late last year for the last Wareham meet, and mine is a tiddler by comparison

Don't worry about it Paul. The Met Office has more computing power than NASA and the weather still gets them flummoxed! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Depends on how much gin you want to spill on the way I guess but F4/5 is do-able depending on the wind direction. Whenever I head out somewhere, I'm usually more concerned about what it'll be like for coming back. I've been caught out more than once and had to leave the boat for a week when the forecast looked good. Last time it happened I was in France and I had to take the ferry back!! Good Luck this wekend and may the weather gods be kind to you. Rob

My thoughts would be sea state - by the looks of it, it should be calmish - even with a strong wind at the moment.

BBC Sat-Sun forecast is for sunny NE'lies @ 9-11mph - day temps 6-8C
Should be great outward trip - relatively downwind. Seastate should be ok unless you time it when wind is against tide. Even then, you are talking about the smallest boat being a 41ft "monster". Surely they and you are well capable of handling short trips in moderate to rough conditions if they arise. Mind you it will be very nippy on your extremities.
Go for it and enjoy yourselves./forums/images/icons/cool.gif

They were all tucked up safe and sound at Town Quay Lymington this afternoon when I went out, and looked like settling in for the night when we returned. Passed on a hello to Planty to the boat moored outside him.

Took a novice initiated out for a spell of winter boating....she says she'll go again, so it can't have been that bad out!! (I hope!) Blowing up a little in places, but generally slight to occasional moderate. Roughest bit was going out of Needles Channel, where the line from Needles to Needles lighthouse was roughish, but only for a small stretch. Out towards Poole, easy cruising, back towards Cowes got a little rougher as the wind changed direction later in afternoon.

>> it was wet and windy and a bit bumpy <<

what time where you out? It was lovely in the afternoon. Sun out (not wet at all), bit windy yes, but nothing bad, and sea quite flat in most places. Though Yarmouth was interesting - wave rolling straight in to harbour entrance and up the big concrete ferry ramp - very unusual, and never seen it quite like that before.

Forgot the digicam, but did have a disposable camera that had been sitting in car for a year, so I'll see if the prints are usable, and post them if they are.

there was a bit of tide this weekend so timing and area would have been relevant........
glad you got out and had a good time. even better that your companion wants to come back for more. like you I believe that if someone can enjoy it for the 'getting out' element dominant at this time of year the beers, BBQ , sea and sun later in the year make it even better!
I have a couple of weekends of tasks ahead on the boat (that I want to do) and should be fully active again mid March - assuming I can get a Bravo III prop spanner from somewhere at a decent price!

Wind was with tide most of afternoon, so no problems even off Hurst and Needles. Did bottle out of going into Newton Creek though, as there was a rolling swell, and the entrance looked very shallow at 16:00.

Went out of way to ensure comfortable warm ride, so increasing future possibilites of boating weekends! :) As she has two young daughters, 11 and 8, might have to rethink future boat buying plans away from performance, to family boating /forums/images/icons/frown.gif. Though they all went out dolphin watching in Oman last month, in a sportsboat in quite rough conditions, and girls wanted to go back out again next day - so sounds like they might be ideal early recruits to performance powerboating /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Will introduce the girls to delights of south coast boating when it's a bit warmer, and BBQ's etc are likely
