Good morning,

I hope all is well with you this morning?

As you may well be aware we have a deep area of low pressure forecast to cross Scotland this weekend. The weather has rather suddenly taken on an autumnal theme, and the low pressure will be bringing strong winds and some heavy rain with it.

What is interesting to note is how the jet stream is forcing its way through the British Islands and Ireland. This chart ( http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/cgi-...60&ZOOM=1&ARCHIV=0&PANEL=1&LOOP=0&INFO=0&WMO= ) from Weatheronline shows clearly how the pressure systems at the surface, and the jet stream interact.

Notice how the jet stream is meandering around and is tied in with areas of low pressure, which tend to be to the north of the jet stream.

Take a look at the next chart (http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/cgi-...-&VAR=jeps&HH=60&PANEL=3&ZOOM=1&ARCHIV=0&WMO= ) and by the end of next week, as pressure is forecast to rise to the east of the country, the jet stream weakens and turns into a more southerly direction. This indicates a ’piling up’ of warm air over western Europe and hence the build in pressure which Atlantic pressure systems will have some trouble clearing away.

Of course, these are predictions but it is quite handy to see how the models handle this.

Hope this is of interest,

With best wishes,
Simon
