Ligurian sea, by repute, can be stormy. Crossing from France to Italy, 'cutting the corner', anyone have any suggestions about how soon after January the chances of good weather become reasonable in that part of the Med?
I have experienced F8 in June and flat calm in December round there.
Its a bit like crossing the Biscay, sit and wait for that weather window - for Biscay you watch the depressions and nip across in between; for the Gulf of Genoa it's the tail end of Mistrals that have to be avoided and these are generally predictable.
Go for it in whichever month you want - but be prepared to wait.........
It was certainly having lots of wind when I came down the Adriatic across to Malta.
Lots of depressions in the winter, down the Golfo di Genova, but all easily tracked and forecast, so if you use metal Mickey and choose an appropriate window not impossible or particularly rash.
Just got back this week from a trip between Livorno and San Remo. All I can say is do not rely too much on the forecast. It was forecast as SE force 2 sea smooth more or less all week but the reality was very variable. At one time we had about force 5 from the SW with moderate seas.
Having said that I have been moving my boat all the way up from southern Italy this summer and this week was the first day I've actually managed to find enough wind to sail all day.
Choose your day carefully and you should have no problems.
I'm based down there and forecasts can be unreliable. I generally look at forecast but back it up with "nowcasts" by calling relevant target marinas who'll have other forecasts. The problem is that there are few "systems" of weather - there are strange jets of fast moving air in which it's F7, outsdie of these F2. Direct from Nice to Livorno is about due East, 130 miles, thouh it only costs another 30 miles to sneak around the coast.
To answer your question, i would be ready togoat any time. There will definitely be periods during january when itis perfectly feasible, other times definitely not.
In my experience Mistrals do not conform to the rule of either one, five or nine days. The Mistal in August this year lasted at least three weeks and was still blowing when I left the Rhone. Genoa city is worth a vist in my opinion.
