After a successful bid on eBay I am expecting to soon receive a Target HF3 (basic not the M or P version)receiver that I want to use on board with a laptop for weather fax. Will this receiver need any modification, what cable is best to connect it to the laptop, what is the best antennae, should I use USB or LSB etc etc.
It will be used in the Bahamas and East coast USA.
I tried a Yacht Boy 400 with disappointing results on two computers one laptop one desktop pc with jvcomm software.Should I expect better results with the HF3?
All information welcome particularly from anyone using this receiver.
Pete

ah jist cannae see a man in distress ... mind, if it had been me, i'd have checked before buying it ...

if your shorthand's good, turn volume up and note signal. it's only 120 baud or so so plenty time to write down dots and dashes erm spaces ...

if there's not a phono connection hanging of it or an rs232 then try this lot or you could try them anyway as they have software and hardware stuff etc .. best to ring them where ever you are.

works very well with active aerial .. get it from here plus bracket ...

OK correct me if I'm wrong, but the basic version does not have an audio out socket to connect to the laptop.
I think you need the /P version.
You will then need a phono to stereo mini jack (2.5mm)
You will also need software to RX weather faxes etc.
The best is JVComm 32 and will RX faxes, NAVTEX as well as RTTY.
I use this and it is very successful with my laptop.
It is available in the public domain as a freebie and is widely used by Hams worldwide.

It may be possible to modify the Target RX by putting a feed out from the high side of the Volume control via something like a 22k resistor, but this is a specialist job.

get your software here:

www.jvcomm.de

Frequencies for WFAX are in Reeds Almanac.

Hope this helps
