My experience is that VHF f/c s in Norway are skimpy unless the weather is bad. I'm not sure what the official position is now. In 2001 one was encouraged to take out a subscription so as to receive useful weather f/cs. Is this still the position? If so what is the subscription cost? Any info gratefully received.

You rarely pick up a VHF forecast, and even more rarely understand what they are on about.

The best forecasts are on the web. I have very rarely been out of phone range - so I normally use a laptop and a built-in phone. Also, there are many areas on the inner route amongst hills where you may not have much joy from VHF- but a phone works fine.

official site with inshore and offshore forecasts, wave conditions etc is:

http://www.dnmi.no/english/maritime/index.html

I also download maps from

http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/semb24.gif - because they are pretty and the interpretation is worth the extra download time (it is rarely wrong).

Most towns and villages have internet cafes (they are very wired here) - so an option I have used is to pop in for a coffee in the morning and pick up the data for the next few days.

Most of Norway is not deserted (like W. Scotland) - there are houses everywhere. If all else fails - you could knock on a door and ask!

Norway weather

No experience of Norway yet. Heading that way - Inshallah - next spring.

Last summer, heading around Ireland from Cardiff towards Canna, had use of a laptop and an Orange cellphone with a 'special' roaming package that permitted us to log on, reach an ISP, reach any web met service we chose, and fairly swiftly download that day's ACTUAL and FCST charts onto the PC - each day's stuff in a separate folder 'Mon', 'Tues', 'Wed'.....

We were able to interpret at length and compare changes between last FCST H+24 with today's ACTUAL, etc. Worked extremely well. Not caught with our Goretex breathables down once - which makes a change!

The bill for 10 days of this - when it came - was for £11.

I'll be using this again!

Any guidance on Noggy wx. and charts, places to look for and places to avoid, would be welcomed.
