weather charts-help please

Just a quickie,

on weather charts that show wind direction & strength as like a feather, how do you read it? away from the tip? toward the wind strenth end? Also how does the rating work? 1 bar equals how much wind?

any help would be welcomed thanks

Treat it as an arrow i.e. the end without feathers is the way the wind is blowing (away from the feather). Each half feather = 5kts so 2 and a half feathers = 25 kts.

I thought each feather represented 2 levels on the Beaufort scale ? so 2 and a half would be a force 5 ?

I think Tony's right, but if you think about it, up to gale force there's not TOO much difference.

It was one of those photos you take thinking it'll never come out properly - we were luckly to get into Salcombe just ahead of that monster which was just as well as it was regata week and madly busy...
