Yes - only an objective lens and an eyepiece. As in the original astronomical telescopes.

our buses were fitted with reversing cameras recently. I drove one of them that hadn't been set up correctly - the image wasn't reversed - and it was almost unusable.

The simple answer to the mirror conundrum is of course that the mirror doesn't invert laterally but you expect it to do so.

More modern binoculars have a porro-prism arrangement in each 'tube' to correct this problem. Nothing to do with the number of elements in the tube.

Try lying on your side on the floor in front of a mirror. The image now appears to be reversed vertically - ie the other bloke looks like your double, but back to front.
Note that it does not now reverse horizontally.

Conclusion: it is nothing to do with the mysterious properties of mirrors, but with your expectations and interpretation of what you see.

WD 40 has it's uses, but it will harden, and is difficult to remove. Certainly not advised for oiling printers. It took me several years before I believed the stories that it was excellent on paper pick up rollers. Normally, oil and rubber do not mix, but if you are having problems, just paint a coating on the pick up roller. It really does work.
