Don't know how many people here know about this, but with all the fairly recent threads on RCD categorys, sea state etc I thought I'd share this website - basically there are a number of super bouys and light ships that send various data, on an hourly basis back to a data center. This data includes wave height - the link takes you to the Sandettie lightship which is great for Ramsgate - Calais cross channellers since prior to your departure you can get a snapshot of current wind and wave height half way across. There are numerous other bouys around the coast of the UK but the site also gathers global bouy data.
Using the historical data and with wind forecast + tide tables you can also build your own wave height forecasts.
