Introducing my eight-year old stepson to the joys of sailing this w/end and he needs summat waterproof. Just in case. Any suggestions where best to go for this? Oh, and I don't mean offshore, breathable oilies, just something to keep him nice and dry and toasty. He comes fully rigged with lifejacket and stout lifeline already.

Cheers all.

Justine

If he's like most 8 year olds he will probably lurk below or in the companionway so needs plenty of warm layers with a showerproof (Millets do some cheepos) set on top, and a change of layers for when he's soaked. Don't forget footwear and spare socks.

If it's his first trip then nothing too ambitious and keep trips short & sweet. He'll love a bit of helming, but will soon get bored.

For alongside entertainment you can't beat a bosuns chair on a halyard at just above boom level.

I had an 8 year old son last year. Fox's chandlery turned out a cheap pair of trousers which went with the Helly-Hansen top that was a coat when he was 4 and is now a jacket!

Thanks all. Compass do a good inshore suit for £49.99, for future reference, i.e. if anyone else ever finds a wandering 8-year old in need of oilies.

We however took tome's stirling advice and went to Millets - got a great jacket and waterproof trousers for about 40 squid, and they're even in nautical colours. Let's just hope the tyke finks it's 'trendy' enough...

Cheers!

Lickle trick.

Get him to look out for a buoy or mark (doesn't matter if you've already spotted it) as though it's vital. Describe what you're looking for. When he spots it, he'll be chuffed as hell and you can congratulate him on the success of your trip. He'll be 'one of the crew', and proud of it.

Bon voyage
