\"Waterproofing\" spray hood

Any (polite) suggestions as to what to use?

Spray hood about to go in the washing machine so figure I might as well have SHMO apply some "waterproofing" after before she refits it to the boat.

Re: \"Waterproofing\" spray hood

Fabsil worked for me. Also the Nikwax range, but they are more expensive and the breathability doesn't seem too important in a sprayhood.

Re: \"Waterproofing\" spray hood

Frankly, do not put in washing machine. Clean with brush and detergent - mechanical cleaning will do no better, and will rough up the fabric. It should, if made of acrylic, be man enough to shed water without proofing, but if you want to lavish "Fabsil" (Millets do their own brand) on it, away you go....

Re: \"Waterproofing\" spray hood

Fabsil may work for a short period, but for that application I would recommend going to a camping store and seeing if they have some more robust stuff for tents.

Re: \"Waterproofing\" spray hood

Another vote for Thompsons Waterseal. 5l can for the price of a silly Fabsil spray (most of which goes off into the air!).

Dont forget a test patch first though.

Re: \"Waterproofing\" spray hood

tried Thomsons this winter but it did not work. Gone back to proper canvas proofing stuff

Re: \"Waterproofing\" spray hood

O.K. so detergent and wash in-situ, rinse, dry and copious quantities of Thompsons Waterseal.

SHMO will not be happy and hand cleaning the hood /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thompsons works great for me. Clean the spray hood and/or cockpit cover by hand, hose it off and let it dry, then brush on the Thompsons liberally but careful not to get it on the windows. Do it at the start of each season. Keep a wet edge while brushing on to avoid marks.

Re: \"Waterproofing\" spray hood

I cleaned mine on the drive with the pressure washer - came up very clean. Used Fabsil for the first time - don't know how it will work but next time I'll use a paint on variety - spraying in the slightest breeze makes it impossible to get an even covering, half of blows away and it smells horrible and has dire warnings on the can about being fatal etc.

Re: \"Waterproofing\" spray hood

Got some awning waterproofer at Halfords camping section. Did not try it yet. Has anyone else?

Re: \"Waterproofing\" spray hood

I wouldn't put it anywhere near the washing machine but would wash in a soap flakes solution (like Lux) as this is far less aggressive on the fabric and will improve its take-up of the waterproofing solution.

I have had good results with Nikwax.

Good luck!

Re: \"Waterproofing\" spray hood

Don't use ordinary washing powder as its difficult to completely remove by rinsing and even the smallest amount left will wreck any subsequent application of waterproofing.
Best stuff to use is Nikwax Tech wash, expensive but works very well.
Before using washing machine ensure that detergent dispenser is clean and run an empty hot wash cycle to clear machine of any residue.
Fabsil works well for the heavier fabric, haven't used waterseal, but it reads well.

Re: \"Waterproofing\" spray hood

I used the washing machine with some hand wash flakes and some cillit bang stuff. put it through twice then two rinses. came up great! Waterproofed using nikwax in the macjine (about £5 off ebay) - very good - worked a treat!

Re: \"Waterproofing\" spray hood

I have (when I can find it!) an aerosol Nikwax product which is hydroscopic, so you wet the cloth, then spray and the chemical is absorbed deep into the fibres- I got this product to reduce UV damage, but Nikwax had not at that time (Summer 06) done any tests on cotton canvas so it is a bit of a gamble. I am pretty sure it is a waterproofer too, so it may be worth checking out

Re: \"Waterproofing\" spray hood

Wickes brick sealant seems OK so far, since December. About 1/3 the cost of Fabsil. Canopy was vile but a long soak in the bath with some hand washing powder and a bottle of Starbrite sail and cavas cleaner seems to have made it clean (several machine rinses as well) and then using my spraygun sprayed with brick sealant. I'm sure someone here posted that the brick stuff is basically the same as Fabsil but priced for builders not hobbyists.
