Waterproof thermostat - arf, really?

I was thinking I ought to fit a thermostat for the tube heater in my engine compartment, at the moment it rather extravagantly runs all the time when plugged into shorepower. Anyway this was the specially manufactured IP65 thermostat I found for sale on Amazon:


It gave me a chuckle anyway, though I suppose it's fine. I wonder how much rugged-looking industrial equipment is just an innocent domestic item in a rufty-tufty-looking box?

I also have a tube heater without a thermostat.
Some tube heaters come with a built in thermostat which is possibly an easy option rather than a hard wired frost protection thermostat. And not necessarily expensive.

That thermostat might be a bit slow to react to a drop in temperature in its cosy little box.

I have thermostatic plugs from TLC. About £15 a pop. And you need to charge them regularly over the summer or their internal batts give up, but I set mine at 5c and leave alone over the winter. I guess they might be working tonight

I leave mine on all winter to help prevent condensation they are so low wattage I think it's only about £80-90 per season & helps prevent mould etc & less risk of not coming on when needed

Ik built one exactly like in the pic. Lowest setting in 5 degrees so it is on before the temp gets too cold.

I mounted a standard stat and tube heater on ply ,why does ur stat need to be water proof

I used a stat last year and being a petrol boat I didn't want any arks as the switched closed so the simple (temporary) solution was to wrap it in cling film. Worked fine and there were no explosions.

I had the same concerns as I too have a petrol boat, and so tend to leave the heaters switched on, rather than have the thermostat cutting in and out.

However, I've just bought a Thermo-txt unit, which you can fit inside the cabin and run the heater mains lead to. It has a remote temperature sensor that can be placed in the engine bay. It has the added advantage of sending a text message if the shorepower is ever interrupted, as well as temperature alerts.

I can't comment on how good it is, as I've yet to fit it, but in theory it seems to tick all the boxes. It's about £130 but I got an equivalent on ebay for about 60 quid.
