Problem - nice but light coloured upholstery in saloon, but likely to get wet and salty if sat on with wet oilies. Does anyone know of a maker of plastic covers that could be used to cover the "proper" ones in such conditions, but be easily removable? Obviously a perfect fit would not be vital.

Thanks in advance for any assistance

Buy some cheap suitable fabric and elastic and learn yourself sewing. Its suprisingly easy.
Just needs to be like a fitted sheet on your bed made. I f you don't fancy trying yourself find a local lady who does. I wouldn't bother paying marine rates.
To make it easier you can make patterns of the cushions with a roll of lining paper

SWMBO bought a load of blue fleece material + velcro to make up covers for the saloon of our last boat (essential when you have a 3 to 5 y/o boy) I think it involved some stringy stuff in a sewing machine or something... I didn't see her using a hammer or spanners anyway. They looked very smart and did the job.

I had the opposite problem, during a knockdown all my berth cushions ended up completely drenched. I had fortunately bought a blow up single mattress which I found was ideal to put on the berth to keep me relatively dry from the sodden cushions. I found it worked better not blown up. One side is flocked and the rest plastic. I left the flocked side uppermost as it stopped the squealing between my waterproofs and the mattress. I think I paid about £6 from someone like ASDA for the single blow up mattress. I have been meaning to buy more as I do largely single handed ocean sailing, I tend to go to bed fully dressed and sometimes wet in case I have to do major deck work during the night.
