We are looking to site an iPad in our cockpit and wondered what the best rigid case was to mount the iPad into that can maintain its waterproof rating when plugged in to keep it charging? There seems to be lots on the market so we don’t know which one to choose. Any help would be appreciated

I use a Lifeproof case for both the iPad and iPhone. It isn’t waterproof when charging but this has never been an issue as I only fire up the chart every now and then, like when entering an anchorage or narrows.

It lives folded away away under the sprayhood in a cheap eBay bracket fixed to a Ram Mount so it can be swung into position when needed and is out the way at all other times.

Also to bear in mind, put in a Wifi "hub. I use a vYachtWifi one, fed by nmea from the SH Ais GPS radio that then broadcasts the data wirelessly to the Tab at the helm. Basically if I was starting again, use a wireless hub as the ship data centre, then feed everything to it and squirt it wirelessly around and use Tabs/Ipads as "instruments" wherever you are on the boat.

+1 for life proof. I did extensive research in the Summer and concluded it was the best available. Have used it daily for 30 wet days in August and it was perfect. Screen can get a bit confused if very wet but I think this happens with all of them.

Life proof nuud for definite , ive had mine on i pad air ii for years , last one was on previous pad , leaked a tiny bit , apple replaced pad and case , just in case , i bought case from apple , exspensive , but saved worry of copy , plus excellent service .

I've been very happy with LifeEdge for my Ipad 2, most specifically because it provides a series of mounting brackets as well as the case itself. When I found a reliable way to secure the tablet it really came into its own. Before then it was a bit of a faff for the helmsman to also use the tablet. This works well for our boat because we have wheel steering and therefore a location to clamp it.
But this does not offer waterproof charging. And a quick internet search doesn't reveal any leaping to the fore.
Did you (OP) mean that there are many that offer waterproof charging? Or just that there are many waterproof cases on the market (which is definitely true).

And it looks like the Lifedge doesn't fit the iPad Air range. Which makes me think that they're not planning on making them much longer.

They (Rokk) do, however, have an "Ultimate waterproof USB Cable" which sound promising (especially for £30) until you realise that it's only waterproof in the middle, not at the ends.

Which would have been a good trick, and the whole point of a "waterproof" USB cable.

But my point about a way of securing your iPad still stands. My clamp is a "Scanstrut" one (aka Rokk, confusingly).

Not sure why I am getting so interested in this, but this ghastly thing seems to offer what you are looking for, and at a mere 199 Euros :

The price does not include their "special waterproof cable" which in this case does actually seem to waterproof the ipad end, though waterproofing the other end doesn't seem to be their problem.
