The exhaust system in my W.Fulmar doesn't have a waterlift. There is only what seems to be some kind of muffler made of black rubber and too small to be really effective. The setup is not too noisy but I would like it to be whisper quiet.
I am thinking of fitting a waterlift silencer(from Vetus probably) but I am worried that it will create to much back pressure. The exhaust hose is aprox. 3 meters long.
Does anybody have any thoughts on this?
Thanks in advance.

I did exactly what you are contemplating on my Fulmar - a Vetus trap. BUT there can be no other fitment in the exhaust pipe, otherwise back pressure would be an issue. Go for it - whisper quiet it will never be, but a lot better - yes.

Incidentally, the original Westerley sound deadening material in the engine compartment is a lot of rubbish. If you have not done so, heave it out and replace with a modern (non-eggshell type) proofing - I used Halyard's: not cheap but a much better performance.

Peter,
I am interested in the steps you have taken to reduce noise -- i.e. fitting a Vetus trap. I also have a Westerly Fulmar fitted with a Bukh 24. Did the installation of the Vetus trap also have any beneficial effect on the steamy exhaust regularly experienced with Bukh engines?
Stewart.
