Not sure how I got involved. Anyway there is a group of people who are peddling a water bike 1000 miles around the inland waterways and aiming to collect 1M pieces of litter.

I, my son and a few friends shall be peddling the bike on Tuesday 21st August from Burghfield (The Cunning Man pub) into central Reading and then back again. Anyone can join in and have a go, just turn up (pm me if you think you might want to and I will send you my number so you can easily locate us).

After Tuesday, the bike will be moved to Birmingham, to start its last leg down the Grand Union (I think) into central London. I am sure there will be other opportunities to join in (although I think I am the only forumite involved atm). Full details of the project here: https://sayyesmore.com/waterbikecollective/

I suppose it's natural to ask "why?". If there's that much litter in the inland waterways, most of it must surely be deposited by the users of the waterways. So why not just leave it until the inland waterways become too unattractive, at which point the users would no doubt change their habits.

I expect most of it comes from towpath users, not boaters.

I doubt it, like fly-tipping is not done by users of the countryside...

Mike.

OK, so the OP and his son and friends are paying £25 each to go and pick up someone else's litter. If they give me a fiver each I'll let them collect in our village.

A tad cyclical me thinks. The money goes to the charity that makes all sorts of outdoor events happen for lots of people. I’ve been part of the wider “Yes Tribe” for a couple of years now and it has enabled people who would not have considered the idea, to come sailing with me and me to do a whole loads of other activities that I would never have considered by myself.

So how about a litter pick in our village? A nice day out in the countryside, quiet lanes, etc.

Thanks for that. I hadn't heard of them, but it looks fun and I shall investigate more.

Most of the action is on Facebook. There is a main group plus a number of regional ones. It is all very informal and people just put up opportunities and others respond. There is a festival in October, to which I have not been. Plus this year the Water Bike collective events.

Join me in Reading and we can discuss a suitable date :)

BTW there is no fee to join in and have a go on the waterbike. Only the main rider pays.
