Am considering replacing the 5 gall water tank under the v berth in my 23' Pageant with a larger one, prob 45 litres - is the extra weight forward likely to spoil the trim? (Have already replaced the old volvo with a slightly lighter BETA, so there's a bit less wt at the stern end too).
Am tempted by the price of plastimo flexi tank, but do they flop about when half full?

You are adding an extra 50lb (max) weight forward, and you say have reduced weight aft, so it will have an effect. However many boats sail a bit better when trimmed down by the head so it might be of benefit?

I wouldnt worry about the effect on the trim of the vessel - if you would like extra water capacity, just do it.

Your own weight, sitting in the cockpit while under sail, will more than compensate for the extra weight up forward, especially if there are additional crew in the cockpit as well.

The only disadvantage (and this could be important on a racy boat, but slight on a Pageant) would be increased longitudinal inertia (and hence pitching moment) caused by the extra weight in the ends.

G'day NickNapper,

For best performance, comfort and sea keeping both ends should be kept as light as possible on any sailing vessel, if you plan to purchase another flexible tank look into relocating the existing tank midships, and the new one also midships on the other side.

Avagoodweekend......

I thought one litre of water = 1kg or 45 x 2.2 nearer 100lbs?, if sailed with full tank? or am I confusing it?

I wrote an "extra" 50lbs .

Your calculation correct, 45l = approx 10 gallons and weighs 100lbs

1 gallon water weighs 10lbs.

Original tank 5 gallons, new one 10 gallons QED
