Hi, when the power is switched on to my the water tank gauge ( VDO ) it is now always in the full position even when the water level is dropping by use, when the power is off the gauge falls to empty, before I start taking the boat apart to get at the tank, a few questions

what would cause this ?

is it a fault with/at the gauge ?

or at the tank, what type of "sender" or float is the norm ?

my boat is a Bounty Sovereign 30 Sunbridge river boat.

This question was raised a few weeks ago, regarding the VDO fuel gauge on a Merry Fisher 805. It was the sender and i would strongly suspect the same is true in your case.

A search of the forum should turn the thread up. The poster had the sender removed and repaired it, they posted a pic of the repair, which might help you.

This happens when the sender wire is earthed. It may be that the wire has dropped off the sender and is earthing on the tank. Otherwise it is likely to be a faulty sender.

VDO gauges and senders work slightly different to most. The gauge reads full, until the sender moves it back to where it should be (if that makes sense). A break in the wire on the VDO sender makes it read full.

Thanks guys for the info & links,

the el side of boats is over my head, when the weather cools down I will have a look at the tank,

again thanks, ( but I may be back )
