Another engine related post.

The red tap on my water inlet ball valve came off in my hands last weekend - I assume this means the rest isn't in great condition so thought it might be wise to replace it. I want to take the replacement with me next time I go and rather than carefully noting dimensions when it came off, I launched it at the wall and stomped off. So I hoped someone out there would know the spec/dimensions of the valve in question, it fits into to standard Westerly gunmetal water intake. I assume it screws onto the skin fitting and the strainer in turn screw onto it?

Thanks

T

I bet a centaur originally had a gate valve.. A ball valve would be a more recent fitting

Trouble is they are often fitted with steel handles but replacement handles are available and you can get stainless ones.

Cant be sure of the size. 1/2" on a Berwick IIRC

ASAP supplies should have the replacement handles (if not eBay) and new ball valves if necessary http://www.asap-supplies.com/marine/fittings-valves-strainers-seacocks

Check the valve for signs of dezincification. Hopefully will be DZR, in which case should be marked CR.

Sounds like your boat is Knackered- you need a new one!!!
I might be able to direct you to someone who is looking for a cheap Centaur for a small fee if it helps

One corroded handle, the only logical choice is to reach for a jigsaw, a sledgehammer and an egg whisk- why didn't I think of that? :)

Sorry did I say ball valve, I meant gate valve...thanks for the link.

You did say ball valve but if it is still a gate valve consider replacing it with a ball valve with a stainless steel handle

So that would be a 1/2 inch ball valve female to female with stainless steel handle?

The strainer has an electrical connection to the engine, would mixing gun metal and stainless give me any galvanic issues?

Cheers

Probably a 1/2" BSP Gate valve. This happened recently on a pals boat up here due to the gland being left slack and the leaking. Tightened the gland and found a new handle in the marina skip. You will find either gate valves or ball valves in the marina swinderly.

PBO. Short length of stainless or brass strip, drill and a wee square file, or as others have suggested, -- scrap the boat.
